“The holidays are meant to bring us all together to share in the joy and warmth of each other’s presence.” —Stephen and Ayesha Curry

With that spirit in our hearts, the team and our village of amazing partners and volunteers joined and as they hosted a winter wonderland-themed 10th annual Christmas with the Currys.

500 Oakland children and families—over 2,000 people in all—filled the with holiday cheer this past Sunday, as they enjoyed ice-skating, ornament decorating, a free book fair, winter-themed arcade, snowball toss, and of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus. Thanks to our incredible sponsors, each family took home gifts, including a new laptop, gift cards, books, meal kits, clothing, toys, basketballs, and more!

Happy Giving Tuesday!

This year we invite you to get into the holiday spirit with us and make today Gifting Tuesday by supporting our annual gift drive for kids in East Oakland. Join us in spreading holiday cheer through the act of gift-giving and help make sure families in our community have a happy holiday season!

Here’s how it works:

1. Visit our Target Gift Registry (link in bio) and scroll through the hand-picked gift options. Our staff took care in making selections that are enriching, culturally relevant, and most of all, fun!

2. Select the gift(s) you’d like to sponsor.

3. Purchase your selection(s) and have them shipped directly to us (shipping option will show at checkout). Don’t forget to leave us a note so we can thank you later. 😊

4. Sit back and smile!

That’s it - we’ll take care of everything else.

If you’d like to give a monetary donations, just visit eoydc.org/donate. However you choose to give, donations are tax-deductible and everything goes directly to supporting our young people.

Happy Giving!

Happy Friday Y'all....

We are so excited to announce we are one month away from our Annual College Networking Event.

Every year our high school scholars and our College Alumni come together at our Brotherhood event to eat and start conversation about what to expect heading into college, the fun, the classes, the friendships, the transition from high school to college and more.

If you know High Schoolers that can benefit from this event please share this with them.

As we all know, tomorrow is election day aka 🗣 GET OUT AND VOTE! day. 🗳

So for today's Motivational Monday we're getting motivated by listening to the words of our Intern Kaliyah Tillman, a first time voter who was interviewed by Holly J. Mcdede for KQED Kaliyah spoke with Holly about local politics, violence in Oakland, what's really important to young people and more.

We are so proud of the way our youth speak up for the change they want to see in this world and honored to play a role in making sure their voices are heard.

Catch the full interview below and hear what else Kaliyah had to say about Oakland and what we need to do today to make tomorrow better.

and don't forget to vote tomorrow, November 8th!

Happy Friday friends!

We've got the best music video you've ever seen to help take us into the weekend.

Our After School Leadership Academy (ASLA) students remixed the iconic song "We are Family" by Sister Sledge to show what their EOYDC community means to them 🥰 and unlike Beyonce they gave us visuals 😂😂

Watch as they give a one of a kind tour around our facilities and show what a day at EOYDC looks like. We hope you have as much fun watching this as ASLA had filming it.

Written, produced and directed by the stars of the show. 😎🎬

EOYDC, is honoring Dia De Los Mu***os with the help of Ms. Taja (Assistant Arts Coordinator) and who built this beautiful altar in our lobby where our staff and kids can come to remember and celebrate the lives of those who have passed on.

"Day of the Dead combines the ancient Aztec custom of celebrating ancestors with All Souls' Day, a holiday that Spanish invaders brought to Mexico starting in the early 1500s.The holiday, which is celebrated mostly in Mexico on November 1 and 2, is like a family reunion—except dead ancestors are the guests of honor. Day of the Dead is a joyful time that helps people remember the deceased and celebrate their memory. "

It's Wednesday, and you know that means, another tip from our Wellness Team.

When putting these tips into practice remember it is important to remind yourself that these things take time.

It can take anywhere from 18 to 254 days for a person to form a new habit and an average of 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic. -Healthline.com

Its spooky season and what's more spooky than a scary story? 😱😆👻

In After School Leadership Academy (ASLA) our K/ 1st grade students wrote a scary story with the help and creativity of Ms. Danika, one of our ASLA Coordinators. The story stars our beloved Facilities Manager and EOYDC superstar Mr. Claude, and our amazing ASLA Manager, Ms. Courtenay. Check out the tale they made up in the second pic!

Our ASLA program helps develop the character, socio-emotional health, and academic skills of elementary school students through exploration, tutoring, mentoring, and enrichment activities while building lasting bonds.

Our Pathway to College (PTC) students are in DC on a college campus tour getting a feel for the DC area and a taste of college life! They've already hit up a handful of schools including Maryland's largest HBCU, Morgan State University and Coppin State University, an HBCU named for F***y Jackson Coppin, a Black woman educator who became the first Black superintendent in the U.S. We couldn't be more excited for them and can't wait to hear all about it when they get back.

Check out our stories this week to keep up with the tour and see where they're headed next!

Our Pathway to College programming supports students with college/ scholarships applications, allows them to attend college tours all over the country, and gives them access to a support team that will check in with them throughout the year. Do you know a student that should be in our program? Link to sign up is in our bio.

Each year tour is different but one thing remains the same: EOYDC alumni greet our students in each city to show them the ropes and answer all their burning questions about what college is like. Check out these throwbacks pics from our past tours and tell your favorite Oakland scholar to sign up!

A very special thank you and shout out to Southwest Airlines for being our official travel sponsor!

Hate doesn’t promote growth. Love your mission. But you have a team member who is promoting hate and divide. Please help them see color isn’t always the reason to deepen the divide. Not all “white” are white. (Great grand daughter of a Nigerian slave). Sad that her hate of my “skin color” seemed to support her belief and prejudices of me. Yet she doesn’t know me. Or those she chooses to bully. This is not how we should lead our diverse youth.
