East Oakland Youth Development Center

East Oakland Youth Development Center “Tomorrow holds few promises without promising youth… We owe them today; they will lead us tomorrow.” - Regina G. Jackson, President & CEO, EOYDC

In May of 1973, the EAST OAKLAND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER (EOYDC) was founded by Robert B. Shetterly, former Chairman of the Board and CEO of The Clorox Company. His vision was of an urban community center where young people could grow and thrive. Since opening its’ door in 1978, the EOYDC has continued that legacy by becoming a national model for community-based nonprofit agencies. We have continued to be dedicated to equipping youth and young adults (with special attention to those of East Oakland) with the skills, training, and values they need to become responsible citizens and to assume dynamic leadership positions. The Center has served more than 30,000 children, adolescents, young adults, and parents from East Oakland and throughout the City. Our free comprehensive core programs Physical Development, After School Art, and Project J.O.Y. (Job Opportunities for Youth), are coordinated to meet the clients’ emotional, physical, intellectual and economic needs. In 1983 the East Oakland Youth Development Foundation Board (EOYDCF) was created with the primary responsibility to raise money for the Center and provide fiscal oversight for the EOYDC Endowment Fund. The 8-12 Foundation members are financial and management executives of Fortune 500 companies. They are personally committed to reaching their goal of raising $16MM in endowment contributions. When that goal is reached, the normal allocation of 5% of the accrued interest would cover the annual budget, which would preclude the need for additional fundraising programs. The Center’s multi-functional facility is located in East Oakland’s Elmhurst District, which of course makes this the primary service area. While we are continuously trying to identify important opportunities to be “A Part of the Solution” for the youth living in this vital community, we welcome all of the Bay Areas’ youth and families to participate in the services and/or programs offered at the EOYDC. We offer an unforgettable, positive, and safe experience for the youth of Oakland.

Mission: "Building Character to Build Communities" EOYDC develops the social and leadership capacities of youth and young adults (ages 6 – 24) so that they are prepared for employment, higher education, and leadership opportunities. The mission of the East Oakland Youth Development Center is based on solid research which demonstrates that interventions that engage youth from high risk environments in forming relationships with adults, mastering a skill and contributing to their own well-being and that of their community have been found to be highly effective in preventing at-risk behaviors such as dropping out of school, substance abuse, juvenile delinquency and teenage pregnancy. We strive to incorporate as well, the supports and opportunities of relationship building, youth and community involvement and skill building. The EOYDC strives to lessen the risk factors faced by our youth and enhance the protective factors. The EOYDC fulfills this mission by offering educational, cultural, artistic expression and recreation programs that meet the holistic needs of the individual. The three core programs that characterize the EOYDC’s purpose are Project J.O.Y., Art, and Physical Development. These departments are structured in such a way that encourages youth to become self-sufficient and responsible members of their community. Of primary concern at the EOYDC is teaching youth to embrace their unique cultures and to live and work responsibly and cooperatively with other communities. The EOYDC recognizes that many of the youth and their families who participate in its programs often face barriers to participating fully in their community. The EOYDC further recognizes that individuals must be given an opportunity to learn marketable skills, attain a basic education and participate in motivating and inspiring activities. The EOYDC believes that self-empowerment comes through work experience and educational opportunities.

“My career is to bring light to peoples lives. If I'm playing the game I love, I want people to feel that and love the game as much as me. When I mentor, I make an effort to correct mistakes I would have made at the age of my young mentees. I am here to help people realize their talent, maximize the work ethic to groom the talent they have(in all fields), then show them how to do the same in others. EOYDC Post. It was 1984 and I was participating in training for the soon to be open Burger King at Eastmont Mall. Singer Bernard Wright (RIP) came out and sung his hit song Who Do You Love to us and signed albums.
EOYDC adds joy to teaching it's young students, especially ones that demonstrate they are unafraid to fail, and keep showing up with a personal commitment to excellence.
Hate doesn’t promote growth. Love your mission. But you have a team member who is promoting hate and divide. Please help them see color isn’t always the reason to deepen the divide. Not all “white” are white. (Great grand daughter of a Nigerian slave). Sad that her hate of my “skin color” seemed to support her belief and prejudices of me. Yet she doesn’t know me. Or those she chooses to bully. This is not how we should lead our diverse youth.
