Barbara Lee. Dolores Huerta. And now — Ericka Huggins. 🖤

Some names carry the weight of history. This is one of them.
The Black Futures Ball is profoundly honored to announce Ericka Huggins as this year’s recipient of the Dr. Ida Louise Jackson Lifetime Impact Award.

Ericka is an educator, poet, human rights advocate, former political prisoner, and Black Panther Party member who has spent more than 50 years putting her life in service to community. She directed the Black Panther Party’s Oakland Community School. She led HIV/AIDS education programs. She brought mindfulness into schools, jails, and prisons. She shaped thousands of minds as a professor of Sociology, African American Studies, and Women and Gender Studies. And she is still going — still teaching, still facilitating, still showing up.

Her life is not just a legacy. It is a blueprint.

We cannot wait to celebrate her on August 1st and invite you to join us. 🖤

She went to Fremont High School. Now she leads it. 🖤

Meet our final 2026 Champion for Youth honoree — Nidya Baez.

Nidya is a first-generation college graduate, UC Berkeley alum, and current graduate student at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. She is now the Principal of Fremont High School — her own alma mater — and has spent her career doing exactly what she set out to do at 16 years old: increase youth voice and leadership in her community.

She still teaches a Civic Engagement class. Because that’s just who she is.

We are so proud to celebrate Nidya at the 5th Annual Black Futures Ball on August 1st. 🖤

Meet our next Champion for Youth honoree — Kelly D Carlisle.

Kelly is a storyteller, Navy veteran, community visionary, and founder of Ad Astra Sankofa, LLC. She previously founded Acta Non Verba: Youth Urban Farm Project and has spent her career turning bold ideas into real community institutions — spaces where young people can imagine, heal, and thrive.

Her work bridges cultural memory, creativity, and justice. And that is exactly the energy we're bringing to August 1st.
