Oakland Fire & Rescue History
Oakland Fire/Rescue was formed in 1977 by the Town of Oakland to fill the growing need for an immediate response to fire emergencies in the community. They were stationed off of Highway 194 behind the water plant. There were 10 volunteers led by our first chief, Barry Burch. We have since evolved into a combination department consisting of 13 full-time personnel
and 6 volunteers while our fleet has grown to include 3 pumpers, 1 medium rescue, 1 brush truck, and 1 ATR. All of our apparatus are equipped with emergency medical supplies and our personnel are cross trained as Firefighter/EMTs and Paramedics. Our primary/first response area has a population in excess of 10,000 and covers an area of more than 68 square miles. In addition, through automatic aid agreements with the Fayette County Fire Department, we are second due to Somerville, Macon, and Hickory Withe. We also provide back-up coverage to any community in Fayette County that may need us. We are proud to say that we are an ISO class 4 fire department. We have a comprehensive training program with regular weekly training along with special training sessions as needed. Oakland Fire & Rescue Code of Ethics

5. To avoid alliances with persons or businesses whose goals are inconsistent with the performance of a firefighter/first responder.
6. To never falsely claim qualifications I do not have.
7. To share publicity equally with fellow firefighters/first responders, whether favorable or unfavorable.
8. To pledge loyalty to my supervisors, fellow firefighters/first responders, and to the organization I represent.
9. To bear constantly in mind that the truth is to be sought before the cause is made so that the stature of Tennessee firefighters is enhanced rather than tarnished.
