Wishing a warm and wonderful Diwali to you and yours, from the team at BAWAR
is the Hindu festival of lights with its variations also celebrated in other Indian religions. It symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance"
As we watch the heartbreaking destruction of human life and heart bursting expressions of love on the global stage, we are reminded that knowledge, humanity, and justice are not equally accessible. As we weep, we also build, we also dance furiously in these hard times, and we also prepare to determine a light-filled and prosperous future for those being targeted by violence.

Posted • October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Like most of you, we’ve been focused on showing solidarity with Palestine to end the genocide. But as the month comes to a close, we want to remind everyone of our guide: “Interrupting Intimate Partner Violence: A Guide for Community Responses Without Police.”

We spent 3 years talking to advocates, survivors and community members to put together an in-depth resource for how to interrupt domestic violence without calling the cops.

Check it out at www.antipoliceterrorproject.org/resources.

80% of survivors who have police interactions say the police either did not help or made things worse.

Forcing law enforcement onto survivors who reject it means there is no one to call for help, thus abandoning them to suffer in silence, ensuring ongoing abuse, placing the lives of them and their children in grave jeopardy.

We hope our guide serves as a practical reference as we build alternatives to policing. Our goal is to create a replicable model grounded in safety, healing, family, and community. Let’s keep building together.❤️

We are dedicated to shifting the tides in the streets of Oakland for Black and Brown femmes who are being hunted by predators. Thank you to Nola Brantley Speaks & Adamika Village for leading this action and gathering our organizations to ensure that the work we do which is heavily supported by the Department of Violence Prevention makes a sustained impact for children and families in the Bay. Our program Achieving Balance to Overcome Violent Environments (ABOVE) supports survivors ages 14-25 of any gender who have been directly impacted by commercial sexual exploitation. We're here to help. Email us [email protected], DM us instagram.com/rising.a.b.o.v.e, tag us on TikTok .above

Our Story

From its beginnings in 1971, BAWAR has addressed the issue of sexual violence with two basic goals: 1) to establish a place where sexual assault survivors could receive the quality counseling and advocacy they deserve, and 2) to provide community education regarding sexual violence issues.

Although our name is Bay Area Women Against R**e, we serve anyone affected by sexual violence. BAWAR defines sexual violence by the narratives of the survivors who experienced the violence and we are here to believe and validate the community we serve in a trauma-informed, culturally appropriate and accessible way.

We provide a 24-hour crisis hotline available for anyone needing support in connection with experiencing sexual violence. In addition, we provide in-person counseling at both our Oakland and Fremont office locations. We provide advocacy, support, and accompaniment for medical and reporting processes in the aftermath of a sexual assault. All of our services are available in both Spanish and English.

For over 45 years BAWAR has offered counseling services and advocacy 24 hours a day. We cold not do this without the help of our volunteers and our community.
