Blue green algae alert

⚠️ Rhode Island Department of Health and DEM are advising people to avoid contact with Slack Reservoir in Smithfield/Johnston due to harmful algae blooms (HABs). These blooms are caused by blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), which can produce toxins that can be harmful to humans and animals.

What to avoid:

• Swimming, fishing, boating, or kayaking
• Don’t drink untreated water or eat fish from the pond
• Keep pets out of the water

HABs can move around, so use caution in all areas of the reservoir. This advisory is in effect until further notice.

📞 To report suspected blue-green algae blooms, contact DEM’s Office of Water Resources at [email protected]
