Every year, 11th grade students at Envision Academy (EA), Envision's Oakland 6-12 grade school, complete a week-long internship as part of their Work-Based Learning experience, known as World of Work ("WoW").

Recently they held their culminating internship exhibition, where students shared what they learned from their experiences. Here are a few quotes from the interns about their experience:

“In my internship journey I’ve learned a lot about my school, Envision Academy, it’s history and roots..also about defense and student-led conferences.”

“Connecting, learned a little bit more at becoming better at working in a team.”

“Learned a lot about video production…now I know there’s a lot of work that goes into it.”

“Communication, I do have anxiety communicating. Actually this week I did a presentation about my leadership goal to improve my communication.I can actually see the improvements. Whenever I had questions in the past I would keep them to myself.”

“I’m really glad I got to connect with and work with you guys, It’s been the best thing ever.”

“I learned a lot about my classmates and learned a lot from them. I really enjoyed it, I wish I could continue this.”

Envision Academy Juniors recently shared their learning after their World of Work (WOW) week. They engaged in internships and externships across the Bay Area, including at our very own Envision Support Office. College and Career Advisor, Micheal Viera coordinated a wonderful event in which students, families, and staff engaged in authentic conversations about their experiences.

Toward the end of February, City Arts and Leadership Academy held a Black Foodie Land as the culminating event for Black History Month.

The purpose of Black Foodie Land was to provide a school-wide experience that truly represents Black culture, unity, and joy. This experience involved playing classic games, music, and of course delicious food prepared by local Black owned/operated vendors.

Special thanks to the Black Student Union for organizing the event under the leadership of Ms. Modesty and Ms. Simone who also serve as dedicated teachers in our Special Education Department.

Envision Academy is honored to have received a visit from Interim Oakland Mayor Kevin Jenkins in February. Mayor Jenkins, a truly connected and inspiring leader, shared words of encouragement, appreciation, and acknowledgement for the important and urgent work our teachers and staff do every day.

Mayor Jenkins issued a special Mayoral Proclamation honoring Envision Academy for being “a leader in educational excellence, dedicated to student-centered learning and equity in Oakland” and for “fostering a pro-Black, anti-racist environment where all students, particularly first generation college bound students, can thrive.” We are incredibly proud to celebrate this honor and recognition from our beloved city’s Interim Mayor.

Envision is extremely proud of having one of the few Oakland high schools (Envision Academy) and only Hayward high school (Impact Academy) to have 100% of our students graduating with A-G requirements completed. (The average A-G completion in Alameda County is 60%.)

“A-G completion is just really a gatekeeper: if you don't have it, you can't be admitted to a CSU or a UC,” Reed previously told the San Francisco Chronicle. “So if you're denying students the opportunity to complete (the courses), then you're denying them the opportunity to even apply.”

Envision Academy Celebrated Black History Month with Author Talks-

Throughout February EA hosted three dynamic Black authors, allowing students to hear from the authors, engage, and receive a signed copy of their book. This was a unique chance for students to celebrate Black storytelling, gain literary inspiration, and connect with authors who champion diverse narratives.

Steven Mathis is the author of “Oil and Blood”. Mathis is a thought-provoking author who delves into the intersections of culture, struggle, and triumph through science fiction. His compelling storytelling unearths deep truths about identity, history, and the generational impact of perseverance.

Lala Thomas, author of “Unexpected”, is a powerhouse in the contemporary genre when one of two friends gets pregnant and the navigate the challenges of this new dynamic. Her work explores love, loss, relationships, and self-definition, creating stories that resonate with readers on a profound level.

Jamaya Walker, is the author of “Unspoken Words: From A Daddyless Daughter” and “Pain, Pen, Power: A Writing and Reflection Journal for Daddyless Daughters."" She is a licensed Social Worker and CEO of Daddyless Daughters. Through her books and research, she empowers young women navigating life without a father figure, offering wisdom, strength, and a path toward wholeness.

18 Envisioners represented at the 16th Annual African American Regional Educational Alliance Professional Development Summit at CSU Hayward this past Saturday, February 1st.

Hear from Envision Academy Principal Kassandre Harper-Cotton about the experience:

It was a beautiful way to uplift the first day of Black History Month and Black people. This one day learning retreat was full of wisdom from transformative lecturers and facilitators. The goals of the summit were to: understand the components of becoming a Black-Serving Institution, to develop strategies to implement change at our school sites, and to build a network of educator committed to equity. We were presented with a book written by the keynote speaker, Brian Rashad Fuller, “Being Black in America’s Schools”. We attended workshops around building systems and policies that uplift Black voices, amplifying joy, and advocating for our students with diverse needs. A moment of pride, of which there were many, was watching and feeling original performances by Black students from the Oakland School of the Arts which the evoked the names of our ancestors through the power of storytelling. We left not just invigorated—but, activated.
