AIMS Middle School eighth graders went on a campus tour of Merritt College chaperoned by by Mr. Burrell, Ms. Bowie, and Mr. Kabeer. Everyone had a lot of fun and for many of the students it was their first time on a college campus. 🏫

The event was hallmarked by a message from Dean of Enrollment, Ree’shemah Thorton, who told students “you can start right now this summer, taking classes that will give you college credit.” The dean told a story of her own daughter who had taken American Sign Language in eighth and ninth grade and was able to use that to meet her UC foreign language requirement. She concluded by telling the students to spread awareness and “tell your parents and your family.” 👏🧑‍🏫

Taking college courses early on can help our students to save thousands of dollars in the long run. Her advice is great knowledge for our students to bring home and share with their families as AIMS encourages early college awareness for not only our students, but for their families as well. 📝

All the students went home with a Merritt backpack and some small gifts. Thank you to all of our chaperones for supporting our students and helping out with the event! 🎒

AIMS Elementary School hosted their second College Awareness Assembly with College Bound Coordinator, Mr. Kabeer. He discussed which majors are available in college and what it’s like to live in the dorms with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. 🏫

The students were assigned a practice college application where they considered where they want to go for college, what they want to be when they grow up, and what important lessons they learned from the college awareness assemblies. 📝 They had an opportunity to try on a cap and gown and dress up in professional attire to present. After completing their applications and presentations, they were entered into a raffle to win t-shirts from some of their favorite universities! 🎓

Success begins at an early age. These assemblies help students to start thinking about college early on, inspire them, and prepare them for the future! 🗓️

🎓✨AIMS Elementary School welcomed College Bound Coordinator, Mr. Kabeer, to bring college awareness to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. The students played a game called “Would You Rather” that discussed different job options and the training or degrees needed to get the job later on. The game presented the difference between jobs you can get with no degree, with an AA, or with a BA. 🏫

They discussed different college options like community college, state college, or university as well as the option to pursue school while in the military. Students received a take home assignment asking what college and job they would like to pursue in the future. 📝

It's never too early to start thinking about your future. From fun activities to engaging discussions, let's ignite the spark of curiosity and plant the seeds of ambition in our youngest learners! ✨🎓

Maya Woods-Cadiz, Superintendent of AIMS K-12 College Prep Charter District, interviews with Myrna Castrejon, President and CEO for California Charter Schools Association, in the Black History Month Edition of the Charter Nation Podcast. Superintendent Woods-Cadiz helped create Education for Change and served as a Director for OUSD before facilitating a turnaround as the Superintendent for AIMS District. She helps create conditions for success in Oakland by prioritizing the vision. For Woods-Cadiz, the vision comes from several generations of experience in the Oakland education system as a student, parent, and as an educational leader.

Superintendent Woods-Cadiz advocates for high expectations with a high level of support to make sure children are affirmed in who they are and encouraged to become greater. AIMS District ensures that 100% of students are accepted into a 4-year College or University upon graduation. The District is able to accomplish this goal because of the structure, financial planning, and great team that support the vision. She encourages future Charter School Leaders to embrace who they are, remember what’s important, and be bold!

The AIMS K-12 College Prep Story

“Our mission at AIMS is to cultivate a community of diverse learners who achieve academic excellence. Our commitment to high expectations is attendance, academic achievement, and character development results in our students being prepared for lifelong success.”

Founded in 1996, AIMS K-12 College Prep Charter District began as a middle school (AIPCS) by Native American families looking to retain a cultural connection for their children. AIPCS was Oakland’s second publicly-funded charter school. In 2006, AIPCS became the first Oakland public charter school in Oakland to win recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School. Later that year, AIPCS expanded to include a high school (AIPHS), and, in 2012, AIMS K-12 expanded to include an elementary school. As AIMS K-12 grew, the student body became increasingly diverse, and, in 2020, both our elementary and middle schools were recognized for nearly closing the achievement gap in African American students. To date, AIMS K-12 currently serves approximately 1350 students.
