The Alameda County Community Food Bank (ACCFB) invites the community to participate in a Community Conversation on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 from 2 pm-3 pm.

Six months ago, over 100 community members convened to discuss what it means to “Seize the moment in policy advocacy to achieve racial equity”. We are coming together again to share what we have done since last year and look at the opportunities in 2022; with a focus on mission alignment, policy advocacy, democracy, equity, and inclusion.

Please join ACCFB on February 23 from 2:00pm to 3:00pm as there is no strategy without you.

We are excited to announce that Recipe4Health is launching its newest clinic in partnership with Bay Area Community Health. Recipe4Health’s model consists of three key ingredients. The Food Farmacy, supported by Dig Deep Farms and Food Hub, lets health care providers prescribe regeneratively grown, locally sourced food to patients in the same way that they would prescribe medication. Similarly, the Behavioral Pharmacy Group Medical Visits, supported by Open Source Wellness, make stress reduction, exercise, nutrition education, and social support part of patients’ regular medical care. The third ingredient, Food as Medicine Trainings for clinic staff, provides the education and systems needed for clinics to deliver Recipe4Health programming to their patients. Together, these ingredients equip providers to treat, prevent, and reverse patients’ chronic disease and food insecurity.

ALL IN’s Recipe4Health initiative addresses the social determinants of health to improve community health and wellness. Social determinants of health are the parts of how people live that affect their health. They include food insecurity, social isolation, lack of housing, poverty, and safety concerns. Recipe4Health directly addresses food insecurity and social isolation through its innovative Food Farmacy and Behavioral Pharmacy programs. Swipe through our graphic to learn more about the social determinants of health and how we address them.

On October 29, 2021, Supervisor Wilma Chan, Alameda County District 3, convened a visit and facilitated a discussion with U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13), ALL IN Alameda County Chief Medical Officer Dr. Steven Chen, and community partners at Native American Health Center (NAHC) to learn how community partnerships are being leveraged to strengthen the health and wellness safety net through the COVID response and beyond.
Dr. Chen highlighted how Alameda County’s Recipe4Health initiative creates intentional partnerships between healthcare (clinics), community-based organizations (health coaches), and food systems (farms) to improve outcomes and processes across these sectors. Dr. Chen shared how this model can be scaled across the nation, building bridges between pre-existing work in these three sectors.

ALL IN Alameda County grieves the loss of its champion and founder, the Honorable Supervisor Wilma Chan. Supervisor Chan founded ALL IN in 2014 in a bold effort to address issues of poverty and its root causes.

She was an inspiration to all and a steadfast advocate for children, families, and those often unseen. She was a fierce leader, trailblazer, and always put community first.

The ALL IN Staff and extended family are in deep mourning and channel her tenacious spirit to carry forth her legacy and commitment to ensuring Alameda County families have access to basic needs including food, healthcare, housing, safety, quality education and economic opportunity. Supervisor Chan will be deeply missed.

How do different identities experience food security? In America, historically marginalized communities face increased chances of being food insecure. Recipe4Health is working to address the disparities in food security by providing fresh produce and healthy foods to communities in Alameda County who face barriers to getting nutritious foods.

The Recipe4Health (formerly Food as Medicine) initiative provides patients with two main ways of improving their health: (1) fresh produce from the Food Farmacy and (2) behavioral health support through Group Medical Visits (GMVs). GMVs are supported by and help patients practice healthy eating habits, exercise as a group, practice mindfulness, and build community. They include cooking lessons, nutrition information, dance, meditation, and group meals.

Food and nutrition insecurity increases the chance that someone will develop a chronic disease. During the COVID-19 pandemic, chronic conditions (called comorbidities) make it more likely that someone will suffer serious symptoms or die from the virus. That’s why it’s so important that we address food and nutrition security in Alameda County through Recipe4Health’s food farmacy program.

Dark blue text on pale background reads, “How does food insecurity affect health during a pandemic?” Below is a graphic with arrows pointing between the words “Food Insecurity,” “Chronic Disease,” and “Worse COVID Outcomes” to show that food insecurity leads to chronic disease which leads to worse COVID outcomes.

We are excited to announce that ALL IN Alameda County’s Food as Medicine initiative has a new name, ALL IN Recipe4Health (R4H) and a new logo!!! With the initiative expanding across the county, we needed a fresh way to communicate the many “ingredients” we use to cultivate individual, community, and planetary health. In partnership with urban farmers, health coaches, and county officials, Recipe4Health nourishes the community, provides ongoing behavioral support, reverses disease, cares for the land, creates new jobs, and more. Through these efforts, we hope to rebuild our food and healthcare systems, not only for the individual wellbeing of our residents, but also because rebuilding systems is our only hope to advance racial equity, reinvent public safety, and fend off climate change. We are grateful for the support of our funders - Alameda Alliance for Health, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Stupski, and Hellman -- who make this work possible and we look forward to using our new name for years to come!

Image description:
White text on blue background that reads Introducing Our New Name. Below that, on a white background, our new logo depicts two figures in motion under a plant, forming a circular shape. Underneath the logo, blue text on white background reads ALL IN Recipe4Health. The second slide is the same as the first but reads “Introduciendo Nuestro Nuevo Nombre” for Spanish speakers.
