ACCESS RESTORED ON FOREST SERVICE ROAD 46 – One lane traffic has been restored at the location where a large boulder and debris had blocked Forest Service Road (FSR) 46. Traffic will need to stop in both directions at milepost 3 where the slide occurred.

Over the past week, USDA Forest Service staff and local contractors worked together to successfully remove the boulders on FSR 46 and stabilize the rockslide area along the northern side of the road. One lane traffic will remain in place until final road repairs have been completed sometime in the summer of 2026.

Please drive slow and use caution while traveling through the area, which burned during fires in 2020. Visitors should also maintain awareness of impacts from inclement weather in the fall and winter months.

Full suppression response to holdover fires continues on the Willamette National Forest. Rappellers, a Type 1 helicopter and two engines are currently responding to Incident #458 located approximately 2.5 miles east of the Middle Santiam Wilderness on the Sweet Home Ranger District. The fire is approximately 3 acres. In older forests, holdover fires from lightning can creep in duff, leaves, fallen branches and vegetation on the forest floor, for many weeks before showing a column.

To report a fire, call 911.

💧 Heavy rain chances will focus over the Northwest and Southeast this week. The Northwest will see periods of rain as a series of frontal systems move onshore, and the Southeast will see persistent rain chances through mid-week thanks to tropical moisture associated with Imelda.

Firefighters are responding to a new start on the Diamond Lake Ranger District. The RimRock Fire ( #437) is located just east of National Forest Service Road #3703 and west of Skookum Lake. The fire is an estimated one-tenth of an acre and is contained. This will be the last update unless there are significant changes.

- The Forest is in HIGH Fire Danger
- Public Use Restrictions Level 2 – Fires in Forest Service-constructed fire rings and fireplaces in designated sites.
- Industrial Fire Precaution Level remains at Level 2

Do your part to reduce the number of human-caused wildfires. Remember that even fires in Forest Service-constructed fire rings within designated recreation sites, need to be dead out before leaving your campsite. Drown, stir, and feel your campfire with the back of your hand. It should feel cold to the touch before leaving your campsite.

Let's compare last year's fire season to this year's using data as of today, September 24th, at 2:00 p.m.

We are currently 111 days into fire season, which began June 6th.
81 fires have occurred, burning a total of 302 acres.
Of these fires, 65 were human-caused, accounting for approximately 80%. And we are still in fire season!

Let's take a look at our Fire Danger Levels for the year so far;

0 total days in LOW
49 total days in MODERATE
52 total days in HIGH
10 total days in EXTREME

Now let's COMPARE TO 2024

As of September 24, 2024, 91 fires had burned a total of 4,120 acres within 103 days of the fire season, which began on June 14th. Of these fires, 74 were human-caused, accounting for about 81%. We dealt with more lightning-caused fires, which contributed to a large amount of the acreage, but still, a majority of the total fires were human-caused.

As of Sept 24th of last year, the fire danger levels were
12 total days in LOW
35 total days in MODERATE
35 total days in HIGH
21 total days in EXTREME

So overall, acreage burned is much lower, which is great. However, when considering the human-caused percentage of fires, we're still in the 80% range. Which is very HIGH. The overall state average is around 75%.

What can we do to decrease these numbers? Increase fire prevention messaging? Provide more in-person fire prevention education? Advocate for more fuel mitigation dollars? These are some of the questions that we discuss and analyze, not just at a local or regional level, but across the entire state, and even nationally.

Fire is, unfortunately, not just a rural country problem. Fire impacts everyone.
It takes all of us to Keep Oregon Green. YOU can prevent human-caused fires by following the restrictions that are in place.
