Oaks Corners Fire Department

Oaks Corners Fire Department Phelps is located in Ontario County, which is located about half way between the cities of Rochester and Syracuse along the New York State Thruway.

The Oaks Corners Fire Department is a 100% volunteer department that provides fire protection as well as rescue and EMS services to the eastern half of the town of Phelps, New York. We operate out of a single station and protect a population of about 3,000 residents over an area of 35 square miles. We also protect a 2.5 mile portion of the New York State Thruway and over 10 miles of railways. We p

rotect a primarily rural, residential area with some commercial and industrial occupancies as well. We have 70 members in the organization including 38 fire and EMS responders that respond to around 240 calls annually. Due to the fact that there is no municipal water supply in our fire district we have a current ISO rating of 4/4y. The Oaks Corners Fire Department provides emergency medical services in the form of BLS First Responders. We currently have 12 members who hold an EMS certification of Certified First Responder or higher. Our first responders respond to all medical calls within our fire protection district and provide patient care until a transporting ambulance can arrive on scene. The primary transporting ambulance service for our area is Phelps Ambulance Inc. Around 1999, our agency initiated a public access defibrilation program which has resulted in the training of most of our
firefighters in the use of our automated electronic defibrillators.

Yesterday our crew attended the annual First Responders Day at Cheerful Valley Campground. Our crew had apparatus on display, distributed goody bags and fire prevention materials, and set up a landing zone for Lifenet 712. Also participating in the event was the Ontario County Sheriffs Office, Finger Lakes Ambulance, and fire departments from Phelps, Geneva, White Springs, and Border City. Thank you to the staff at Cheerful Valley for inviting us and to our active and social members who came out to help.

This past weekend we closed the book on yet another Phelps Sauerkraut Weekend. The following are pictures of our department from the parade. Thanks to all of our members who either participated in the parade or helped prepare for it. We had a crew of 18 either marching or driving and we won the awards for second best appearing fire department and best appearing antique vehicle.

This is one of our busiest weekends of the year. It involves a lot of work over many days by many members of the department. The following are just some of what our members do to make this weekend a success…

Advanced planning for fundraising booths
Provide funding for the parade awards
Help setting up the Festival booths
Baking and collecting cakes for the cake booth
Assist with traffic control for the kiddie parade
Staff two festival booths over three days
Shuttle well over 100 cakes to the booth
Prepare the trucks for the parade
Assist with traffic control for the 20k race
March in the longest and hottest parade in the area
Clean up and break down the booths
Respond to day to day fire and EMS calls in addition to all of this.

Thank you to all of our members who participated in these many work details. Your hard work does not go unnoticed.
