Friends of Oakton Library was pleased to work with Scrawl Books in Reston and the Fairfax County Library Summer Reading Adventure staff to sponsor a gift-card raffle for the June 12 first day of registration.

Everyone who registered during that day was entered into a drawing. Winners each received a $25 gift card from Scrawl Books.

Summer Reading Adventure librarian Hallie Jackson commented:
"All of the winners have claimed their cards and have expressed lots of excitement about receiving them! ... thanks to the Oakton Friends for suggesting this and for making it happen last minute—it was a truly special reward to give to the kids while supporting a small local business."

Why does a book I returned still show up on my account as checked out?

This link shows how the library system is processing books to keep customers and staff safe with regard to returned books and materials that you check out from the library.

All books are returned using the book drops at the branch. As usual, you may return books at any branch that is convenient for you.

The very first thing that happens with all returned books is that they are quarantined for 72 hours -- the time that the CDC says the COVID-19 virus may survive on hard plastic surfaces, such as book covers and the clear Mylar wraps that are used on many books.
Only after the 72-hour wait will the staff handle the books and check them in.
(You won't be penalized or fined for your books that are still "checked out" during the extra three-day quarantine period.)

Wondering what happens when books are returned to our branches during COVID-19? They all hang out in a bin for a 72-hour quarantine period before being checked in and reshelved... Here's a glimpse of George Mason Regional Library's bins of quarantined returns.

CONGRATULATIONS, GRADUATES !!

Maybe your graduation is a socially-distanced in-person event, a drive-through event, a remote event, a virtual event, or a cancelled event. Whatever form the ceremony has to take, it does not diminish your efforts and your accomplishments.

Whether you just completed Kindergarten, Elementary School, Middle School, High School or College, congratulations on your special day.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Normally the library would be busy with storytimes, activities and events to celebrate. But this year, COVID-19 has other plans.

Even though we are not able to celebrate in person, Pandemic Stanley and the Friends of Oakton Library want to acknowledge these cultures and their contributions to the United States.

During National Police Week, we would like to acknowledge and thank the members of the Fairfax County Police Department and deputies from the Fairfax Office of the Sheriff for all that they do every day, and especially everything they must deal with during the COVID-19 pandemic.

And we'd also like to thank them for their help during more normal times as they participate in events at the library.

THANK YOU ALL, AND STAY SAFE!

As Pandemic Stanley and others deal with school closings and distance learning, parents and students everywhere are probably grateful for teaching professionals.

What do you love/miss about the library in 2020?

In past years, we have been able to celebrate National Library Week with notes to the library on chalkboards, poster board, flip-chart pages or Post-It notes.

This year, you can still remember how important the library is, but you'll need to use Facebook comments.

In honor of National Library Week (April 19-25), show us your “Library Love” from home!

April is Volunteer Recognition Month, and this is the week that the Oakton Library staff had planned to have their annual Volunteer Recognition event.

But then, the COVID-19 Pandemic changed everything.

Look for a rescheduled event at a future date.
For now, we still want to say "Thank You !" to all of the volunteers at the library, and to everyone -- volunteers, staff and customers -- who are volunteering to stay home and practice social distancing and do whatever we all can to protect the community.

Stay safe !

With all branches being closed, the library is posting storytimes to their page. Including this one by Tina Mraz, the former Assistant Manager at Oakton.

Looking for things to do with your kids?
Give these postings, and other online resources a try.

Stay safe!

Join Ms. Tina as she reads "Little Owl Lost" by Chris Haughton and shares an owl rhyme. Follow along with the rhyme using the fingerplay instructions below. Watch on YouTube: bit.ly/3aBhFaj

Five Little Owls Fingerplay Instructions:
Five little owls sitting in a tree
One flew away! Now there are?
One, two, three, four.
Four little owls sitting in a tree
One flew away! Now there are?
One, two, three.
Three little owls … etc.

Special thanks to Borim Press, Korea for allowing us to share this story.
