Our friends in Middletown need our help with a classic demolition by neglect issue with their local government.

Middletown City Council members are pushing to demolish four city-owned historically-designated signature downtown buildings: the Manchester Hotel, First National Bank, Sonshine Building, and the Knights of Columbus building (aka the Vail House).

City Council meeting is today, June 3, at 5:30pm in the lower level of One Donham Plaza.

šŸ“£ Attention Oakwood history lovers šŸ“£

790 E. Schantz holds a special place in Oakwood’s history. Built in 1924 by Ira Robert Blackburn, founder of Blackburn Products Co., the home later became the childhood residence of Harry Ebeling, a beloved civic leader and founder of the Oakwood Schools Foundation, Oakwood Historical Society, and Stage Wright Friends. Known as ā€œMr. Oakwood,ā€ Ebeling’s deep connection to the community is part of the story of this distinguished home, which has also served as a gathering place for groups like the Junior League of Dayton and The Dayton Foundation.

Iconic in presence, rich in heritage, and refined for modern living, this home is a rare Oakwood offering that honors the past while embracing modern living.

Reach out to for more info on this classic Colonial property.

Believe it or not, the Third St facade of The Arcade is not the only example Flemish architecture in our city (which I happen to be partial to because my mom is from Belgium).

The DeWeese Mansion, built in the 1890’s, is also another beautifully maintained example of it. This home has recently been turned into a new boutique hotel —
I’m hoping to check it out for a little staycation one day!

A little update to my walking tour after hearing some disheartening news about another potential building loss this week—new starting location of The Diner on St. Clair.

I’m excited to announce that after a postpartum hiatus, I am bringing back my architecture photo walks!

Please join me for a photography focused walk in downtown Dayton, ending with a guided interior tour of The Dayton Woman’s Club!

The walking tour is Sunday, May 18 at 2:00 pm, with a starting location of The Diner on St. Clair (101 S. St. Clair Street). The Dayton Woman’s Club is requesting a $10 donation per person for the guided tour, which goes towards maintaining the property for future generations to enjoy. My outdoor walking portion is free.

I’m looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and hopefully some new ones!

Feel free to comment or DM me with any questions.

Hawthorn Hill-Circa 1914, Home of Orville Wright

Although both Orville and Wilbur were involved in planning the home, Wilbur died of typhoid fever on May 30, 1912, at age 45.
Upon completion in 1914, Hawthorn Hill became the residence of Orville, his sister Katharine, and their father, Bishop. Over the next 34 years, the mansion welcomed Charles Lindbergh, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and other prominent figures.
When Orville died on January 30, 1948, Hawthorn Hill was purchased by National Cash Register (NCR) for use as a corporate guest house. For 58 years, the historic home was wonderfully preserved, but only open intermittently.
In August 2006, at the suggestion of Congressman Mike Turner, NCR gifted Hawthorn Hill to the Wright Family Foundation. Managed by the Wright brothers’ great-grandniece, Amanda Wright Lane, and great-grandnephew, Stephen Wright, the Wright Family Foundation asked Dayton History to manage and interpret the home.
In March 2009, Hawthorn Hill became part of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. In June 2013, ownership was officially transferred to Dayton History.
