This week, Oakwood Fire and Rescue proudly recognizes National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. 🚨📞

Behind every emergency response is a calm, steady voice on the other end of the line—our 911 telecommunicators. These dedicated professionals are the first first responders, providing lifesaving instructions, gathering critical information, and offering reassurance during some of the most difficult moments people face.

Their work often goes unseen, but its impact is immeasurable. Day in and day out, they serve our community with professionalism, compassion, and unwavering commitment.

To all of our telecommunicators: thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your vital role in keeping our community safe. We appreciate you this week and every week.

This afternoon members helped with our semi annual litter pick up. Since 2022, Oakwood Fire and Rescue has participated in the Virginia Dept of Transportation's Adopt-a-Highway program on a two mile section of Garden Creek Rd. This afternoon, we collected 27 bags of trash in just under 2 hours. We are committed to being instrumental in keeping our community looking good.

Today, members of Oakwood Fire and Rescue proudly participated in a Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) class, continuing our commitment to providing the highest level of care to our community.

We recommend the training to all provider levels, however the training is mandatory for any advanced life support provider.

Training like this ensures our team stays sharp, up-to-date, and ready to respond when seconds matter most. We are dedicated to constant learning and improvement so we can better serve and protect those who depend on us.

A big thank you to the instructors and our medical director making today’s training a success. We’re honored to serve such a supportive community.

This year, Oakwood Fire Rescue will be co-sponsoring an Easter Egg Hunt with Prayer Warrior House. Come join us March 28th from 2-4pm at Keen Mountain Park for prizes, food and fun.

With the severe cold weather we are experiencing, alternate heating is being widely used to include propane heaters, propane fireplaces and kerosene heaters. Please use caution when using any heat source that produces heat by combustion.

Please use caution this morning as road conditions are still treacherous. Response times will be impacted severely until the road conditions improve.

At 7:20am this morning Oakwood Fire and Rescue along with Whitewood Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to Twin Valley High School for report of heavy smoke inside the building.

Upon arrival, units found light smoke inside building from a coal burning boiler used to heat the building. School maintenance personnel were also on site to address the issue. Positive and negative pressure fans were setup in the gymnasium and upstairs hallways to assist with ventilation.

All fire units cleared around 8:30am.

Christmas party 2025.

Thanks to all our members who were able to attend our annual Christmas dinner. Our main course was catered by Stakehouse (Lebanon, VA). This is the one time of the year where all our members can come together, catch up, and enjoy food and fellowship. Thank you to each and everyone who help make our department what it is today.
