Memorial Day, initially referred to as Decoration Day, was observed by many communities after the Civil War, when the nation suffered more than 620,000 military deaths, roughly 2 percent of the total population at the time. John A. Logan, the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of Republic, chose May 30, 1868, as a day to decorate the graves of Union troops across the nation. From this beginning, Memorial Day is now designated as an annual day of remembrance to honor all those who have died in service to the United States during peace and war. Veterans Day, November 11, celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

Election Poll Watching

Are you interested in being an Election Poll Watcher this election season? Everybody is talking about election integrity and what can be done to help make our election process credible and transparent. Poll Watchers are one of the tools in the election integrity tool belt to help in this area.

The Marion County Republican Executive Committee (MCREC) will be hosting a group, in-person, free Poll Watching training course. It will be conducted by the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) and the Republican National Committee on Tuesday, April 30th from noon until 2:00pm at the Ocala Police Dept. Community Room (402 S Pine Ave, Ocala). This type training will be required for any individual participating as a Poll Watcher in the State of Florida.

The integrity of our elections is very important. We need many Poll Watchers here in Marion County as well as neighboring Hillsborough County. If interested just respond with your name and we will see ya there!
