May 31, 2026: **MCFR Battles Weirsdale Structure Fire**

At 1:45 p.m., Marion County Fire Rescue was dispatched to the 16000 block of SE 138th Avenue, Weirsdale for a reported structure fire. Multiple 911 callers reported a grass fire starting to catch the house on fire.

Weirsdale Station #27 arrived on scene at 1:53 p.m. to find the home 20% engulfed and the nearby yard ablaze. Firefighters quickly deployed hose lines and made an aggressive interior attack on the fire. Crews from Villages Station #10, and Spruce Creek Station #30 joined to provide additional manpower and resources. Additional crews ventilated the roof to improve conditions for search and hose teams inside the house.

The cause and origin of the fire was an escaped burn pit in the yard. As our mandatory burn ban has been rescinded in Marion County, we urge our citizens to burn responsibly. Never leave a fire unattended and always have a water source nearby.

The fire was declared under control at 2:27 p.m. Primary and secondary searches confirmed no occupants were inside. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.

May 28, 2026: **Marion County Mandatory Burn Ban Rescinded**

Effective immediately, the mandatory burn ban for Marion County has been lifted and transitioned back to normal outdoor burning regulations.

While conditions have improved, Marion County Fire Rescue urges all residents to continue practicing safe burning habits when disposing of yard debris.

Safety Reminders for Outdoor Burning:

• Burning trash remains illegal
• Burn piles must meet required setback distances from structures, roadways, and wooded areas
• Yard debris fires may only be ignited after 9 a.m. and must be extinguished before sunset
• Fires must be attended at all times
• Keep a water source nearby
• Do not burn during windy conditions
• Smoke should never create a hazard for neighbors or motorists

Even with the burn ban lifted, dry conditions can still lead to rapidly spreading fires. We appreciate our citizens’ cooperation in helping keep Marion County safe.

For additional outdoor burning guidelines, please visit the Florida Forest Service website.
