I had the privilege this week of being part of our Next Step Prep class for those who are preparing to promote, or just wanting to better themselves. The lists pictured were created by the attendees. In order: expectations of the class, good reasons, and bad reasons to promote. Chief Graff joined us for some candid conversations and Captain Lietz imparted some of his knowledge on scene size ups.

There is a calling greater than all of us that unites us and brings us together. We are forever grateful to the 343 heroes that sacrificed everything 19 years ago. We are grateful to everyone who responded to that terrible incident, and we are grateful to every firefighter, paramedic, EMT, and police officer that moves towards the danger when everyone else is trying to get away.

Officer Development Class 201’s final day. Leadership and encouragement from Division Chiefs Lonnie Blackburn Travis Blackburn, Rob Graff, Drew Rogers and Fire Chief James Banta. The students then made a revised list of expectations to see how their perspectives have changed over the last five days. Everyone got the opportunity for some more Hard Conversations by conducting a mini eval on a classmate, and then graduation and certificates. The hardest part starts right now. We’ve challenged everyone in class to put what they’ve learned to use every day. We look forward to how this group is going to influence the department. Parting thought, leadership is not a class or a seminar, it’s a frame of mind, and a way to live. Go live it.

Chaplain Joe LaCognata talked with us about The Human Side of the Fire Service. Captain Daniel Jodoin demonstrated how to Develop Training for Your Crew, and we closed the day with some more Hard Conversations .

From multiple speakers today we heard how important it is to give expectations to the people you lead, and hold them, and yourself, accountable to those standards. Thank you to Mr. Jeromy Williams Owner/Operator of Chick-fil-A of Ocala, Chief Craig Damien and Chief Joshua Alvarez of MCFR, for speaking with us. We also enjoyed a few Hard Conversations .
