Last week, our Executive Director had the opportunity to speak with the Central Florida Dental Hygienists’ Association at Dragon Flower Winery about child abuse and the important role Kimberly’s Center plays in our community’s system of care.

A special thank you to Jessica for making this presentation possible and to the entire association for your commitment to learning more about how we can all work together to protect the most vulnerable children in our community!

Most children who experience abuse don't tell anyone right away. They may worry about not being believed, feel protective of someone they love, or simply not have the words.

When children know they will be believed and supported, they feel safer speaking up. That environment starts with the adults in their lives. We are here when a child is ready to speak.

Kimberly's Center exists because Marion County decided its children were worth fighting for.

Every forensic interviewer, every medical provider, every therapist, every advocate who shows up for a child in this building is supported by a community that gives, volunteers, and stands behind this mission. Law enforcement partners who coordinate investigations. Schools that open their doors to prevention education. Donors who ensure that no family ever receives a bill.

This work belongs to all of us. Thank you for being part of it.

Last year, Kimberly's Center conducted 508 medical assessments as part of child abuse investigations in Marion County.

Our medical providers are pediatric forensic specialists who conduct exams with the care, expertise, and sensitivity that children deserve. Their work gathers critical evidence, supports investigations, and ensures that what a child experienced is documented with precision and compassion.

As a new school year begins, ask your child if they know three trusted adults they could tell if something felt wrong.

A trusted adult is someone outside the immediate situation who will listen to them, believe them, and help. A teacher, counselor, grandparent or coach are all examples of who might be a trusted adult in your child's life. Practice having those conversations early.

The school year brings new group chats and new apps to become aware of. Before it begins, take a few minutes to review your child's digital world with them.

Know which platforms they are using, and talk about who they communicate with and what appropriate online interaction looks like. Make sure they know they can come to you if something online makes them uncomfortable, without fear of consequences.

Kimberly's Center works alongside local law enforcement as part of the Marion County ICAC task force to respond to online threats to children. Prevention starts at home.

Neglect accounts for the majority of child maltreatment cases nationally, and there aren't a lot of visible signs.

Neglect can come in many forms, like physical, emotional, medical, educational. No matter how it presents, neglect can impact on a child's development, their sense of safety, and their ability to trust.

We serve children across every category of maltreatment. Awareness of what neglect looks like is one of the most important tools a community has.
