Ocean Beach wants everyone to have a safe and enjoyable summer. When alcohol is involved, we love to see people drink responsibly at home or in the restaurants. HOWEVER, there are instances when those who imbibe may encounter our officers. Below is what happens when people decide to consume alcohol in public. THIS IS THE WARNING you wish you read before opening that can or bottleā¦
Alcoholic beverages - open and those being consumed are prohibited outside on public beaches, walkways, docks, ferry terminal areas.
In recent years, more people have come to Ocean Beach for the summer, and in particular July 4th. Some drink to excess, stressing our village resources, and leave a large amount of trash, plastic, cans and bottles behind.
We are addressing this and will have additional police officers on the island and will continue to enforce the prohibition of alcohol on our beaches, streets, walkways and docks.
Alcohol brought to Ocean Beach may be confiscated and violators will be issued summons. We want you to keep your money, but if you insist on drinking in public you can expect the following:
People who are not yet 21 will be ticketed for consumption of alcohol and underage possession. - no mail in, you must appear in village court.
Adults 21 and over will be issued a summons for possession of alcohol where prohibited. Fines start at $300, and / or more depending on the circumstances.
Children under 18 will be cited for possession of alcohol and underage possession. Those fake licenses you may have - leave them at home! We will keep and destroy them and further charges may be filed. All kids under 18 will be released only to a parent or guardian who must appear in person at the Ocean Beach Police Department. Enjoy the beach and beauty of Fire Island. If you insist on misbehaving and consume alcohol, we will insist you join us in court at a later date to meet our judge and other officials in a more formal setting. Dress appropriately for court, as shirts and shoes are required.
