The Bay Walk drainage system is doing very well in these conditions. Here our village Maintenance Staff is clearing the Fall debris from the grates. They have been constantly addressing many issues that have cropped up today.

National Weather Service is expecting a strong developing Nor’easter to impact coastal regions this weekend. Anticipating the deteriorating weather and hazardous conditions, Fire Island Ferry Service will be suspending service Sunday & Monday. Service is expected to resume Tuesday morning. Please read the below FI Ferry notice, stay informed via weather service and the FI Ferry websites for the latest information. Ocean Beach Police will be on duty and monitoring weather conditions as they change.

Sunday 08/24/25: as of 0900, due to the strong rip currents, high surf and red flag conditions, lifeguards will have smaller than normal swim areas with limited wading opportunities. The beach is open, but visitors must adhere to the beach rules and directions of the lifeguards.

08/22/25 @ 0900: Ocean Beach Fire Island and last update: NO swimming today due to the sweep and undertoe. Lifeguards are reassembling their equipment, stands and removing small hazards. The beach is open for visitors to come down and walk, sit, run. Again, please obey the direction of lifeguard and village staff. On BAY Walk overnight high tide, North wind and moon phase pushed Bay water in. Once the Bay water level dropped, the new drainage system and pumps operated as hoped. Bay Walk was virtually dry within hours of the system kicking on. This morning’s North wind, high tide and New Moon trifecta has pushed water again onto Bay Walk. We are confident that on the outgoing tide the system will again do its job and remove the water quickly. Today’s photos are courtesy of Senior Dispatcher Brett Clyne.
