Today we mourn the loss of a true giant in the New Jersey law enforcement community.

Retired Seaside Heights Police Department Lieutenant John Tate dedicated his life to public service, but his impact extended far beyond any one agency. After retiring from Seaside Heights, he quickly became a cornerstone of Ocean County policing. For over two decades, he helped shape the future of law enforcement by training thousands of recruits who now serve in communities not just here in New Jersey but across the nation.

“LT” was more than just a Chief Instructor or Class Coordinator, he was the standard. A presence and voice that echo’s through generations of New Jersey police officers. His expectations were high, his demeanor commanding, and his commitment to doing the job the “right way” unwavering.

Beneath that tough exterior was a man who genuinely cared, who took pride in every recruit and treated them like his own child. LT had a gift; his mere presence made even our hardest days easier. Whether it was a subtle joke thrown your way at just the right moment, or pulling you out of class for an impromptu conversation about football, he knew exactly how to lighten the weight of the job without ever losing sight of its purpose.

His influence cannot be overstated. Every officer currently serving with the Ocean Gate Police Department , from Chief Kuchta to our newest officers, had the privilege of working for or learning from LT. His legacy is not just remembered; it is lived every single day in how we serve our community. There are very few people who leave a mark on an entire profession. Lieutenant Tate was one of them.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Tate family, the staff at the Ocean County Police Academy, the Seaside Heights Police Department, and the entire New Jersey law enforcement community.

Rest easy, “LT,” “Uncle John,” “The Godfather of Ocean County Law Enforcement.” Your legacy will live on through every officer whose life you touched.

Good Morning Ocean Gate!

As the snow continues to accumulate, we want to put out some important information for our residents. Our officers are responding to an increased number of downed power lines and disabled vehicles. Remember, there is a travel ban in effect and we urge residents to stay off the road as our plow crews and utility companies work to restore power and keep our roadways as clean as possible.

There are approximately 30,000 New Jersey residents without power, if you see a telephone pole sparking or downed wires keep a safe distance and call us. Please report any power outages to JCP&L promptly.

In the event of a code blue, Adrain Hall will be open as a warming center.

If you know of someone that is elderly and alone or has special needs, please reach out to us so we can check on them. To request an officer for a non-emergency, you can contact the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Radio Room at 732-349-2010 and ask for Ocean Gate.

Help us help you! Stay Safe and Stay Warm

🚨WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY 🚨

The Governor has declared a State of Emergency effective 12:00 P.M. Sunday, February 22, 2026, in anticipation of a severe winter storm expected to cause hazardous weather conditions across the state, including blizzard conditions with wind gusts up to 55 miles per hour, heavy snow, and potential coastal flooding. The Ocean Gate Police Department and Ocean Gate Office of Emergency Management are monitoring the storm closely.

In anticipation of the incoming storm, we ask residents to assist our plow crews and first responders by keeping the following in mind. Emergency service personnel will be responding to an increased volume of calls for service, and your cooperation is essential in keeping roadways safe and passable so we can quickly assist those in need.

• Remove all vehicles from roadways to allow plows to effectively clear snow and ice. Vehicles not removed from the roadway will be issued summonses and towed subject to the provisions of Ordinance 588-32. Residents may utilize the Mease Memorial Park as off-street parking. The parking lot at the Municipal Building is not open to off street parking for this snow event.

• Keep fire hydrants clear to ensure quick access in case of emergency.

• Check on elderly neighbors or those who may need assistance.

• Prepare for power outages by charging devices and having emergency supplies ready.

Additionally, due to the potential for coastal flooding, residents in low-lying areas should take necessary precautions and remain alert for changing conditions. Our Department of Public Works will be working continuously throughout the storm, and your cooperation is critical in helping them keep our roads safe and passable.

We will continue to provide updates as needed. Please stay safe, stay off the roads if possible, and allow our crews to do their job.

Your safety is our priority.

Apparently, National School Resource Officer Day was this week…and…apparently, the person in charge of social media forgot….

In all seriousness, SRO Vinny Pelino goes above and beyond every day mentoring, protecting, guiding, and being a positive role model for our students. The impact he has in our school and community does not go unnoticed … even if our Facebook reminder did.

We are incredibly proud of the job he does and grateful for his commitment to our community. We’re lucky to have him. The students are lucky to have him, and we promise to set a calendar reminder for next year.

Thank you for all you do SRO Pelino!!
