š² E-BIKE AND BICYCLE SAFETY REMINDER š²
The Ocean Springs Police Department would like to remind residents that electric bicycles are subject to the same general traffic duties and local regulations as traditional bicycles.
For everyoneās safety, please remember:
š¹ Ride as intended. Riders should remain properly seated and maintain control of the bicycle. Dangerous stunts, including wheelies or riding in a manner that prevents both wheels from remaining on the roadway, are strongly discouraged.
š¹ Do not carry extra passengers. A bicycle or e-bike may not carry more people than it was designed and equipped to accommodate. Passengers must have a firmly attached, appropriate seat.
š¹ Ride no more than two abreast. Bicyclists traveling on a roadway may not ride more than two side-by-side unless they are on a path or portion of the roadway designated exclusively for bicycles.
š¹ Never cling to or be towed by another vehicle. Bicycle and e-bike riders may not be pulled, pushed or otherwise propelled by another bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, automobile or other vehicle.
š¹ Keep sidewalks and pedestrian areas clear. Do not ride or park bicycles, e-bikes or skateboards in a manner that blocks pedestrian traffic. Please use caution and observe all restrictions applicable to sidewalks, walkways and park paths.
š¹ Racing is prohibited. Bicycle and e-bike riders may not race another bicycle, pedestrian or motorized vehicle on public roadways.
š¹ Keep both hands available for control. Do not carry packages, bundles or other articles that prevent you from keeping both hands on the handlebars.
ā ļø Important Information About E-Bikes
Under Mississippi law, an electric bicycle is generally treated as a bicycleānot as a motor vehicle, dirt bike or ATV. E-bikes may be operated where bicycles are permitted, subject to applicable state and local restrictions.
Additional state requirements include:
ā¢ No person under 16 years of age may operate a Class 3 e-bike.
ā¢ Class 3 e-bikes must have a working speedometer.
ā¢ Required manufacturer labels identifying the e-bikeās classification, assisted speed and motor wattage must not be improperly altered or removed following a modification.
ā¢ The electric motor must disengage or stop functioning when the rider stops pedaling or applies the brakes.
E-bikes are not dirt bikes. Vehicles that do not meet Mississippiās legal definition of an electric bicycle may be governed by different licensing, equipment and operating requirements.
Please ride responsibly, remain alert and respect motorists, pedestrians and other bicyclists. Safe riding helps protect everyone using our streets and public spaces.
