“It’s basic biology” is often a phrase used to end a conversation, not start one.

The reality is that biology is anything but simple.

The more scientists learn about genetics, hormones, brain development, and human diversity, the more we discover that nature doesn’t always fit neatly into the categories we learned as children.

Acknowledging complexity isn’t rejecting science — it’s following the evidence wherever it leads.

ALSO ... You don’t have to understand every aspect of s*x and gender to treat people with dignity and respect.

But if we’re going to talk about biology, we should be willing to engage with what biology actually says, not just what we learned in middle school.

💜 Learning is not a weakness.
💜 Curiosity is not a threat.
💜 And treating people with kindness costs nothing.

Jersey City is divesting from Citizens Bank, pulling hundreds of millions of dollars out of the financial institution over its ties to private prison companies. The city council voted unanimously in favor of a divestment resolution this week that urged the New Jersey municipality "not to place its taxpayers’ money with a bank that is continuing to finance and profit from the detention of immigrants."

Jersey City held about $265 million at Citizens Bank and has already moved $150 million out.

The city's divestment — led by two councilmembers affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America — is a major win for the grassroots campaign aimed at pressuring Citizens Bank to stop funding CoreCivic and GEO Group, the two largest private prison operators in the United States. The companies also run immigrant detention centers for ICE, including controversial immigration jails in nearby Elizabeth and Newark, both scenes of major protests.

"Jersey City's money will not fund human rights abuses, and we will not rest until ICE is abolished," Jersey City Councilmember Jake Ephros said in a statement.

"Abolish ICE, divest from detention, and hold every institution that profits from this system accountable," said Councilmember Joel Brooks.
