Today Ocean View Fire Company remembers Chief Engineer and Charter Member Nicholas Canuso, who died in the line of duty 65 years ago.

On February 24, 1961 at approximately 3:00AM, Ocean View Fire Company was dispatched to the report of a structure fire on Shore Road (Route 9) in Clermont. Canuso had driven the fire company's fire engine to the scene. Shortly after arrival Canuso complained of not feeling well and collapsed while leaning against a tree. He was transported to Mercy Hospital by Sea Isle Ambulance, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. After his death a resuscitator was donated to the fire company in his memory. Although many years have passed, his sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Congressman Van Drew Asks Residents Still Without Power to Report Outages Through Online Form

In the aftermath of the recent winter storm, Congressman Van Drew's office is working directly with electric utility providers to report power outages across South Jersey and to help restore services as quickly as possible.

To make sure every affected location is being reported, residents who are still experiencing outages are asked to fill out a short online form with their contact information and location. The information collected will be shared directly with the electric company to ensure remaining outages are addressed as soon as possible.

Winter Storm Update – 6:00 AM EST (Feb. 22)

The National Weather Service has issued a morning briefing regarding the February 22–23 winter storm, and confidence remains high that this will be a potentially historic winter storm impacting our region through Monday.

The window to finalize preparations is rapidly closing. Residents should complete preparations immediately and avoid unnecessary travel once conditions deteriorate.

Blizzard Warning Expanded – All of New Jersey

Blizzard Warnings now include all of New Jersey, including Cape May County. Snowfall rates may exceed 1–2 inches per hour this evening through Monday morning. Whiteout conditions are expected. Travel may become life-threatening or impossible. Widespread closures and infrastructure disruptions are likely.

Snowfall Totals Increased
Updated projections show 18–24+ inches possible across much of New Jersey, with some localized higher amounts. Snow begins today, potentially starting as rain before changing to all snow this afternoon. Heaviest snowfall expected this evening through Monday morning. Significant impacts expected for the Monday morning commute, and possibly Monday evening as well.

Strong Winds
Coastal gusts up to 60 mph. Inland gusts up to 45 mph. Blowing and drifting snow likely even after snowfall ends. Power outages and tree damage possible.

Coastal Flooding – Serious Concerns. Coastal Flood Warnings remain in effect for Cape May County.

1–2 feet of inundation possible in low-lying areas. Moderate coastal flooding expected with tonight’s high tide. Spotty major tidal flooding possible. Additional flooding may recur with Monday afternoon and Monday night high tides.

Impact Level
The Winter Storm Severity Index now indicates widespread major to extreme impacts, with potential for crippling disruptions that may linger beyond Monday .

On Sunday, December 21st, at approximately 1542, Ocean View Fire Company was dispatched to the 200 block of Main Street, in South Seaville, for a residential structure fire. Automatic aid on dispatch included Dennis Fire Company and Avalon Fire Department for a RIC assignment. Chief 17 arrived, reported a working fire and requested a second alarm assignment, bringing in Seaville Fire and Rescue Company Tanker 1941, Sea Isle City Fire Department Engine 10, Woodbine Fire Department Engine 16 and Marmora Tower 1550. Squad 17 arrived, began fire suppression and deployed three 1.75” attack lines. The fire was quickly extinguished and units remained on scene for approximately two hours before clearing. There were no injuries reported. Thanks to all companies who responded to assist.
