Terrace Hose & Chemical Company

#3 was organized on June 13, 1928. It was founded by 12 charter members in a deli on Nassau Parkway. Two years later, Terrace moved to it's present location on Columbus Avenue, which back then was a mere single garage. It's first truck was a Model-T hose wagon. As just a hose company, Terrace could not pump water at a fire, but would respond to calls and provide additional hose for the town's single pumper. In 1931, the hose wagon was retired, and Terrace got their first pumper, an American LaFrance. Terrace was now able to respond to calls as a fully functional engine company, and no longer needed the additional engine. In 1971, Terrace began operating with two pumpers, when along with it's 1952 Ahrens Fox, it received an American LaFrance. Hahn custom pumpers were put in service in 1984 and 1989 followed by our first Pierce in 1995. Today, Terrace still maintains 2 rigs, Engine 248, a 2005 Pierce 1500 gallon per minute pumper and Engine 2482 a 2001 1500 gallon per minute pumper. In 2021, Terrace purchase the 1984 Hahn former Engine 248 from a private owner in upstate New York and brought it back home to be restored to its original condition and used for parades, funerals, and other events.

Today was a BIG day for Terrace as our 1984 Hahn Pumper had graphics applied to the cab and pump panel compartments. Finally our truck once again bears the Terrace name and Fox logo. We cannot thank Jessi at Precision Art enough for the incredible job she did. In the next few weeks we will be doing more odds and ends to the truck before the cold weather comes and in the future after more body work is done the body of the truck will have new graphics applied.

Four Terrace members are taking part in today’s Tunnel to Towers Run in NY City. We wish the best to Firefighters Mike Miller, Jimmy Brussel, Kevin Marshall and Nick Miller as they represent Terrace and the OFD and retrace the route Firefighter Stephen Siller took on 9/11/01. Way to go Gentlemen!

In keeping with what might be our most important company tradition, the Members of Terrace went out last night and left bows on the memorial signs of first responders from our community lost on 9/11 and from 9/11 illnesses. Many of the members on the rigs for this detail weren’t even born when the attacks happened and the senior members proudly watch as the kids in the company hung the bows at each location knowing that the lessons handed down about the actions of the firefighters, EMT’s, police officers and everyday civilians on that dark day have reached the next generation. We continue to mourn the sons and daughters of Oceanside lost of September 11, 2001 and will always keep our promise to NEVER FORGET.
