Letter from the Troops :)

"Good Evening,

I just wanted to express my gratitude for the care package we received. The
letter was very nice and we hope the author did well on her math test that
she wrote about. Life over here is somewhat similar to back in the United
States, but it definitely has its differences. We wear the same uniforms
every day, eat at the same locations, and work every day. We cannot drink
the water from the sinks, do not have kitchens, trees, grass, or anything
else of color over here. It's all dirt and sand! The one interesting thing
we do have over here, are camels! They live in the wild out here! The breaks
are very enjoyable when we get to read letters and enjoy the care packages
that are sent to us.

We work every day with the knowledge that we are not doing it for ourselves,
but for everyone back home. We want to make the most out of our time and
ensure you all are safe. I like to write down five topics that I am thankful
for everyday and five topics I am working on. I will definitely put your
contributions to the list of what I am thankful for.

Very Respectfully,

Captain Karl J. Watje

Mesothelioma Veterans Center - Asbestos Benefits & VA Claims

The Mesothelioma Veterans Center was created to provide information and assistance to veterans regarding treatment, clinical trials, and VA benefits for veterans suffering from asbestos illnesses. The MVC was founded by retired veterans and veterans advocates who have helped hundreds of veterans get approved for their VA benefits after developing mesothelioma or asbestos-related lung cancer from their asbestos exposure in the military.

"I would to thank you very much for the morale box Steve Allen sponsored and the Elks Lodge sent to us at the 15th MEU. It was the best box we've seen by far. It is being shared by many Marines and has been a huge hit.

We greatly appreciate everyone thinking about us out here.

"Our platoon sends the deepest gratitude for the care package we received in Okinawa sent from you! It's awesome to know that people are thinking of us back in the states during the time we are away from family and friends. We are all greatly appreciative of your thoughts and efforts, and how a simple gesture can brighten our days.

Thank you again, and enjoy your week!

Dear Ms. Murphy,

I apologize for not emailing you sooner; it was on my to-do list but it seems my organizational skills are being put to the test out here. Our mail cutoff date is 27 October so I imagine the boxes we just received will be the last. I sincerely appreciate the efforts of you and your fellow volunteers at the Oceanside Elks Lodge to support the Marines and Sailors of Lima Company as we traveled throughout the Pacific theater on the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. We accomplished much during our time here visiting Australia, the Philippines, and of course Okinawa; working with the military of our allies, experiencing their culture, and sharing experiences. It is of no small consequence to us that you all have supported us so faithfully. The smiles on the faces of these young men when passing around the care packages you sent, have been a pleasure to see after a hard day's work. Thank you again not just for the tangible items but for the patriotic love that we received with each delivery.

Yours truly,

"Ms. Murphy,

I wanted to send a brief message of thanks to you, Ms. Neilsen, and the Elks Lodge on behalf of all of us here at Company L, 3d Battalion, 5th Marines. As these men have been training hard and remaining ready to respond to any situation on behalf of our great nation here in the Pacific; the love and care sent with the packages that we received from you and the other volunteers, were very warmly accepted and appreciated. The gratitude of our American citizens is the greatest reward that our young men can receive and I thank you for your efforts to sustain that faithfulness. It is our sincere hope that you and your families remain happy, healthy, and safe.

Warmest Regards,

Last week I dropped by the Wounded Warrior West Bat. To invite them to the Elks Oceanside Car Show which will be providing a Thanksgiving in July meal to the active military and their families.
A young Marine took my card and replied, “when I was deployed we received some of your packages. They were the ones with the blue tape”. I said, “yes”.
He said "let me tell you a story…We were out in the field and had not been able to wash our feet. Your boxes contained wipes, cooling foot powder and fresh socks. Please let me thank you and all of the people who sent them to us. Needless to say, they were very much appreciated."

"My name is Chaplain Rob Pitts, and our chapel received the generous gifts of food and toiletries for our personnel.
Being able to share these items with our people here has been a huge highlight.
And you all had a part in brightening their day and encouraging them in their faithful service.
We greatly appreciate the time, effort, and money invested in packing/sending these items.
The Elks Lodge has a special place in my heart since my local lodge helped fund my college education years ago.
You all are making an impact all around the world.

Today I dropped by the Wounded Warrior West on Camp Pendleton. When I gave the young Marine my card he told me this very touching story.

While he was deployed they had received several packages from Hugs from Home Elks #1561 and wanted to thank us all.

He said that maybe his story wasn’t too nice but that they hadn’t been able to wash their feet for about 2 weeks. In the packages along with goodies there were wipes, foot powder and socks. He told me that they were so happy because they were immediately able to use the wipes to clean their feet, powder to cool them, and were able to put on clean socks!

I just wanted to thank all of the people who donate products to us. It is nice hear that everything is so appreciated! Good job and thanks again we couldn’t do it without your support.

"Good Morning Sandee,

I wanted to thank you for two additional boxes we received today with a special thanks to Western Eagle Fundation and Lodge 1561. Since we last spoke we have stopped in both Guam and Hawaii. We are now on our home stretch back to San Diego. I have attached a photo of us washing our aircraft down. It is a 3 day evolution to wash all the nicks and cranny in each of our 7 helicopter to ensure they do no have any foreign dirt before we arrive back in the U.S. Here is a link to an article from Hawaii. http://timesofsandiego.com/military/2017/05/02/uss-makin-island-sailors-make-last-port-call-returning-home/

Again I would like to thank you on behalf of all the Marines of VMM-163(REIN) aboard the #USSSomerset

"Merry Christmas Sandee!

Let me start by saying how appreciative we are to have received the care package the Elk Lodge members put together for our Marines and Sailors. Your gift was received by the Marines and Sailors of Combat Logistics Battalion 11 aboard the USS Somerset, who provide a large array of logistics support elements for ground units on the shore during combat and training operations.
It is a great comfort to receive gifts like yours, not just so that our Marines and Sailors receive gifts during the holidays to boost morale, but it shows them that there are those out there who care enough to do this for people that they don’t know. As service members we must always remind ourselves to approach our duties with a servant’s heart, ready to give and keep giving of ourselves, for people we don’t know, until we can’t give anymore. It is refreshing and inspiring to once in a while be reminded that there are others out there willing to give for us as well. During this holiday season, please continue to keep your spirits high and our nation’s service members in your thoughts, as you will be in ours, and enjoy this time with your family, friends, and loved ones in our stead. Thank you again for the wonderful and thoughtful gift box, and have a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

With much appreciation,
SSgt Christopher Riddle and the Marines and Sailors of CLB-11
U.S. Marine Corps, Forward Deployed"
