The Oceanside Fire Department’s eight firehouses provide a presence in every neighborhood throughout the 42 square miles of the City of Oceanside. The lives of over 180,000 residents and visitors are protected 24 hours per day, 365 days per year by 115 sworn personnel. An additional staff of nine provides support with the goal of efficiently and effectively serving the community. In addition to pr

Congratulations to Ryan Rhoades on his promotion to Lifeguard Sergeant and Dylan Smith on his promotion to Senior Beach Lifeguard!

While Ryan and Dylan earned their promotions earlier this year, they were officially recognized today during a small ceremony celebrating their accomplishments and continued commitment to serving Oceanside’s beaches.

And, of course, no lifeguard promotion ceremony would be complete without a celebratory swim! 🌊

The Oceanside Fire Department’s Rapid Extraction Module Support (REMS) Team is currently deployed to the Timber Fire in Monterey County as part of California’s statewide mutual aid system.

While assigned to the incident, the team successfully rescued an individual from a steep slope, using their specialized training and technical rescue capabilities to safely navigate the challenging terrain.

REMS teams provide dedicated rescue support to firefighters operating on wildland fires and are specially trained and equipped to perform technical rescues in steep, rugged, and difficult-to-access terrain.

Oceanside REMS Team members Rafael Gonzalez and Bryan Howell are partnered with Santee Fire’s Dan Dodds and North County Fire’s Joe Harlin for this deployment. This regional partnership is a great example of the cooperation and teamwork that make California’s fire service and mutual aid system so effective.

California’s mutual aid system ensures that agencies and communities across the state have access to the specialized personnel, equipment, and resources needed to safely and effectively respond to large-scale wildfires and other emergencies.

We are proud of our Oceanside firefighters for answering the call and proud to work alongside our regional partners in support of communities throughout California.

Through an engaging fire safety book, interactive conversations, and age-appropriate lessons, the children learned simple but lifesaving practices in a fun and memorable way.

The Oceanside Fire Department Lifeguard Division takes emergency medical care seriously.

Pictured here is OFD Medical Services Officer Amy Marquez testing our new drowning simulation mannequin, designed to provide realistic training for drowning-specific emergencies. This advanced training helps ensure our lifeguards are prepared to deliver the highest level of care when seconds matter.

As you enjoy Oceanside’s beaches this summer, please stay safe. Warm water and strong currents are making for a busy season. Know your swimming ability, always enjoy the ocean near an occupied lifeguard tower, and make it a habit to check in with a lifeguard when you arrive. They can provide the latest information on surf conditions, rip currents, and any hazardous areas so you can have a safe day at the beach.

On Christmas Day 2024, Oceanside resident Josh was involved in a serious bicycle accident. Firefighter Arturo Rocha responded to the call and was there to help during one of the most difficult moments of Josh’s life.

Today, Josh stopped by the fire station with a simple mission—to say thank you.

Moments like these remind us why we do this job. It’s always meaningful to reconnect with the people we serve, especially when they’re doing well enough to return and express their gratitude in person.

Thank you, Josh, for taking the time to visit, and thank you to Firefighter Rocha and all of our first responders who are there for our community every day.

We had a great time yesterday with NSDC NAACP at the Juneteenth Celebration! Our team enjoyed connecting with the community, teaching hands-only CPR, and sharing lifesaving skills that can make a difference in an emergency.
