Millions of people, including African Americans and people of color, across America have experienced hardship due to the impact of student loan debt. Given the current economic climate and instability of employment opportunities during and post the COVID-19 pandemic, the urgency to solve the student loan crisis is more pertinent than ever. There is an opportunity to work together to urge the Biden Administration to take action through the 50k and Beyond Cancel Student Debt campaign led by the NAACP

This is Bessie Coleman. She was the first Black woman to hold a pilot’s license. Born in 1892 to a family of sharecroppers in Texas, Bessie worked in the cotton fields, while also studying in a small segregated school. Her strong desire to fly came at an early age. She eventually came of an age to learn, but was denied as The United States did not offer flight training opportunities to the Black or female community at that time. She did not allow this to stop her. She saved her earnings and obtained sponsorships to attend flight school in France and in 1921, became the first Black person to earn an international pilot’s license.
She then went on and became a high-profile pilot in notoriously dangerous air shows in the United States. She was popularly known as “Queen Bess” and “Brave Bessie”. After achieving the incredible accomplishment of the first Black woman pilot, she planned to open the first flight school in the United States to offer training to Black Americans. In 1926, Bessie passed away in a tragic plane crash, but her legacy and role as a pioneer in flight lived on.

Today we celebrate Bessie Coleman’s courage to explore the sky, and her determination to follow her dreams regardless of the obstacles in her way.
She is an inspiration.

Each day during this #BlackHistoryMonth, I will be lifting up North County teachers, community leaders, professionals, and business owners whose contributions to our region deserve to be shared and celebrated.

Today, I want to recognize community activist, educator, mother, and the President of the North County Chapter of the NAACP, Satia Austin.

A military spouse from New York who made Oceanside her home in 1994, Satia got straight to work advocating for improved equity and access in North County. She started her local activism as the President of the Black Student Union at MiraCosta College and rose to become President of the North County Chapter of the NAACP in 2013, where she is currently still serving. As both a teacher and a mother to 4 kids, Satia focuses much of her activist energy around the goal of eliminating disparities in education, job opportunities, and health outcomes for kids from underserved communities. She is also active in her church, serves on nonprofit boards, and volunteers with Toys for Tots and city-led revitalization efforts.

Thank you, Satia, for giving your time and energy to make #AD76 a better place to live!

NAACP WINS Court Case to Restore USPS On-Time Delivery A big THANK YOU to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) and Sherilyn Ifill the LDF’s President and Director-Counsel. Yesterday Ms. Ifill appeared on the Rachel Maddow news program in regards to a law suit against the United States Postal Service (USPS) for its new directives that have resulted in a 50-60% decline in On-Time delivery of mail. Since July of this year the new Post Master General (DeJoy) has issued directives to its employees that have seriously limited the USPS efficiency. The case is centered on new Mail Collection Limits. The case was reviewed by Judge Emmet Sullivan of the U.S. Circuit Court in D.C.. “In a last-minute move to ensure mail ballots are delivered in time for the election, a federal judge has ordered the U.S. Postal Service to rescind guidelines that slowed mail delivery over the summer and boost the numbers of late and extra truck trips.” Sullivan had issued a preliminary injunction earlier this month to stop the Postal Service from implementing its policy against late and extra truck trips and to order the agency to allow overtime so that employees can deliver election mail on time. Sullivan’s ruling also ordered the Postal Service to immediately issue a notice revoking its cost-cutting guidelines from July and to provide data on its mail delivery performance and number of late and extra trips. Judge Sullivan Is a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, making this a nationwide order. As a member of the NAACP I feel pride and joy when our organization is successful in its efforts to support our democracy and our right to vote in normal times and “not so normal times”. Some excerpts from the LA Times Article of 10/29/20 by Laura J. Nelson, Maya Lau

Please join us on Monday, June 18th, at our annual Juneteenth Theatrical Celebration. It is going to be a great evening! SAN DIEGO'S ANNUAL JUNETEENTH THEATRICAL CELEBRATION - Cultural Noire Performing Arts Company and WorldBeat Cultural Center, in partnership with Project1VOICE, will present a Staged Reading of Pearl Cleage’s classic play, "Flyin’ West." The Event Sponsor is Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. "Flyin' West" is a powerful look at the African American woman pioneer. The play explores the universal themes of determination, feminism, pride and freedom. Set in 1898, the lives of a small group of African American women change as they leave the oppressive South for the West where they settle together in the all-black town of Nicodemus, Kansas. Their hope and determination to survive in a harsh and unforgiving region are tested as they build new lives for themselves and their families. Among the cities joining the "One Play One Day" staged reading events is Nicodemus, Kansas. "Flyin’ West" features Monique Gaffney; Terrell Donnell Sledge; Portia Gregory; Deborah Mackey; Karen Ann Daniels; and Patrick Gregory. The staged reading is narrated by Gina M. Jackson. "Flyin’ West" is directed by Monique Gaffney and Gina M. Jackson, Artist-In-Residence at Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. The theatrical celebration will be held on Monday, June 18th at WorldBeat Cultural Center Balboa Park. Doors open at 6:00pm; the staged reading begins at 7:00pm. The staged reading is free. An Art Exhibit (WorldBeat Cultural Center is a Smithsonian-affiliated museum) and Cultural Center Tour will take place from 6:00pm-6:45pm.
