🚨Transparency for All—Not Just Law Enforcement🚨

Following a review of a recent arrest, we want to address a growing concern we’re seeing during active law enforcement scenes.

When officers are conducting lawful arrests, their priority is safety, control, and bringing the situation to a close without anyone getting hurt. Crowding a scene, yelling, or trying to inject yourself into that moment does the opposite—it creates risk and distracts from the job at hand.

Everyone has the right to an opinion. No one has the right to interfere.

That expectation applies across the board—including to those elected or appointed to serve the public. Leadership isn’t about who can be the loudest in a tense moment. It’s about setting the standard, not lowering it.

Our officers are expected to remain calm and professional, even when they’re being cursed at or challenged in real time—and they do. That same level of restraint and respect should not be too much to ask in return.

If there are concerns about how something was handled, there are proper channels to address them. An active arrest scene isn’t one of them.

Professionalism shouldn’t be one-sided. Let officers do their job.

Starting today, much of South and Central Georgia are under a burn ban as we continue to respond to wildfires and deal with ongoing drought conditions.

We're asking all Georgians to do your part in preventing the spread of wildfires as response teams work around the clock to contain those currently blazing.

We have received many calls checking in on Deputy Sweet, and we want to provide an update on the accident and everyone’s condition.

On 4/20/2026, Irwin County Deputies were dispatched to the northwest side of Irwin County in reference to a physical fight in progress with reported injuries. The 911 center advised that the offender was heard on the line stating he was going to kill the other individual involved.

Deputy Sweet was responding from Wray to a residence in Rebecca, with a calculated drive time of approximately 40 minutes from his location when dispatched. He was responding with lights and siren due to the severity of the call.

As Deputy Sweet approached the intersection of Satilla Road and State Route 90, he did not observe the vehicle on Highway 90 and his patrol vehicle was struck in the driver’s side door. Deputy Sweet had to be extricated by Irwin County Fire & Rescue from the vehicle and was airlifted to a hospital in Macon for treatment.

We are thankful to report that Deputy Sweet has since been released, and both he and the other individual involved in the accident are expected to make a full recovery.

The driver of the second vehicle was evaluated on scene by Irwin County EMS. The Georgia State Patrol was asked to investigate the crash by the Sheriff’s Office, and the driver of vehicle number two was charged with Driving Under the Influence while operating a motor vehicle.

We would like to say thanks to everyone who has called checking on Deputy Sweet and thank you to all of Irwin County Fire & Rescue along with volunteer Fire who showed up to render aid.
