Yippee! I have heard people talk about when the bus used to have a pull through between the drug store and another store on the left. I’ve searched for a picture showing this and with lots of patience I finally found one on eBay. I colorized it to show some details more vividly. Some of you who are better at identifying car models can give us an idea of when this picture was taken.
I can check this one off my list and move on to my next one which is to find a picture of the outside of the movie theater on the right side of 4th street. If you have one or know of someone who does, please, please let me know!

FIRE AWAY!
This small cannonball was found in an east Irwin County field a few years ago and the owner brought it to my attention in hopes that some knowledgeable people out there might be able to give clues to its time period.
I didn’t have a tape measure with me that day to measure the circumference but you can see it pictured in my hand and if a glove doesn’t stretch I wear an XL. My best guess is that it weighs about 5 pounds.
I showed the pictures to a friend of mine in Macon that studies a lot of history and he feels that it predates The Civil War. I, personally, have no clue.
I’ve been given the names of some contacts that might can help but I wanted to go ahead and see if some of our followers have any clues.
There may have been some skirmishes or battles with the Creek tribe in this area or could be totally unrelated.

Please share with us your thoughts or share the pictures with someone you think might have some knowledge.
I will update if my contacts offer anything of interest.

I’ve been talking with a lot of different folks about traditions that have fallen by the wayside or totally disappeared from family celebrations that the younger generations know nothing about.
I wanted to share with you this pillow that I grew up calling my cemetery pillow. My grandmother made this for me in 1971 from the acetate ribbons on funeral arrangements at my Papa’s funeral. This was during the days when the body was brought back to the house with a tall torchere lamp on each end of the casket and lots of wooden folding chairs placed around for the many visitors who came to pay their respects and partake of wonderful southern cooking.
Has anyone else heard of a tradition of making things from the ribbons of funeral arrangements? Do you remember the days when the deceased was brought back to the house instead of staying at the funeral home?
What are some other older traditions that have almost, or totally, disappeared? Please share with us. We’d all love to hear. If we don’t talk about them then our younger generation will never know. What a historical loss that would be!

I used the last of my vintage yardsticks to line the back of an old shelf and color washed some newer ones to blend in with our office/craft room’s colors. I had two from Irwin County.
The first one is from Irwin County Federal Savings and Loan Association. Anyone remember their years of operation?
The second one is from the South Georgia Wood Preserving Company with a phone number of 305! Does anyone know the history of this company like the owners, years of operation? I’ve never heard of this company. Share your thoughts with us and get ready for more stories to start soon!

This is an old ad painted inside one of our downtown buildings. The new merchant has built a false wall that doesn’t harm it, but the ad is no longer visible. Can anyone give us any information about this old station? Please comment with anything you know.
Our Historic Preservation meetings will begin January 23, in the Community House at 5:30 pm. We’d love for you to come and share information or ask questions. We now meet quarterly so this year will be January, April, July and October on the fourth Thursday of the month. Hope to see you soon!
