The Edwin L. Jones American Legion Post 91 led the Memorial Day Parade Monday, and Dr. John Koehn, age 91, rode in the Shorehaven trishaw right behind the flag bearers. “These were my people, this was my group, there was nothing else to do but march with them,” said Koehn, a Lake Terrace resident. The Vietnam Era infantry officer called himself a “ground pounder” while serving as courier officer between 1958 and 1961.

With his son Mike piloting the trishaw Memorial Day, John asked him to lower the footrest, and John dismounted to join his fleet. “It was killing him to sit in that trishaw,” said Mike. John walked not a few feet, not a few yards, but marched with Legionnaires from the City Beach ceremony location to the parade’s conclusion at Fowler Park. “I didn’t walk, I marched,” said Koehn. “I told Mike ‘Here are my buddies, and I have to march with them.’”

Trishaw pilot Mike had arranged the parade ride a few days before. His father was honored to participate. “This was truly a significant event to remember those who served and gave their lives for this country,” said John. “It is our duty to honor them for protecting our freedoms.” From the trishaw, the Koehn duo saluted fellow veterans, waved to bystanders and commemorated the occasion. “It was so heartfelt being with our veterans,” said John. “I am so proud to belong to this American Legion.” Mike noted, “I was grateful and honored to share this patriotic moment with my dad.”

Visitors could smell pancakes sizzling on the griddle last week when Oconomowoc High School Leadership2 class students set to work preparing breakfast for more than 30 Shorehaven Tower residents. The annual tradition provides whipped cream, berries, pure maple syrup and steaming butter, juices, coffee and water. Students make the meal and serve to residents. Everyone gathered together to mark the feast. "This is all about community engagement," said instructor Kim Mueske. "We're bringing generations together over food, and who doesn't like a freshly griddled pancake?"
