Like the advanced, ready for high school, rockstars they are, the 8th graders studied not one, but FOUR different abstract art styles and combined them into one cool project inspired by Picasso’s Bull Series print! These projects would make such fun personalized thank you cards to use after all the upcoming 8th grade grad parties!

Our 7th graders tried their hands at Op (optical) Art inspired by the glam 1960s English painter Bridget Riley! We know our 7th graders will want to order notebooks or laptop stickers with their awesome designs!

Our SBS 6th graders got to know the famous Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, whose signature geometric works have inspired modern day computer language and programming, fashion design, architecture… and now MAPS! Ms Maurer & the 6th graders really blew us away with their creativity on this project! Each student combined their own “mental map” of their home/neighborhood with Mondrian’s style & a Google Maps fact check just to be sure. Who wouldn’t love to see one of these as personalized wall art hanging in their home???

What study of abstract art would be complete without Pablo Picasso? I think it’s safe to say that our SBS 4th & 5th graders really “understood the assignment”! Check out how skillfully they applied Picasso-like cubism to their own self portraits! Putting these on ANY Square 1 art product would be a precious memento of their amazing talent and a preserved snapshot of how they see themselves for this blink of an eye that is 9-11 years old!

2nd & 3rd grades “visited” the cities of Paul Klee- a Swiss born German artist, author and professor known for the way he combined influences of expressionism, cubism, and surrealism into his own unique style! The uniqueness of each of our 2nd & 3rd grade artists really shined through in the “cities” they chose to convey- A farm, a seascape, and everything in between! What perfect playroom throw blankets or beach towels these would make!!!

Our 1st grade students had a “rolling” good time learning about Jackson Po***ck- the mastermind behind some of the most famous (“action-painted”) American art of our time! Ms Maurer and Mr Jaeger helped our 1st graders create these amazing works of art using a marble rolling technique. Wouldn’t these pieces look great as a gallery wrapped canvas or tote bag?

Our youngest SB artists in 4K and 5K studied the work and style of Trudy Benson, a modern abstract artist who was born in Virginia, and whose work is said to have been inspired by 1980s and 90s computer art programs like the Microsoft Paint program many of us parents remember using in school ourselves! According to Ms Maurer, our 4K and 5K students “learned a lot about patterns and line”! These bright, colorful projects would make fabulous hot pads, kitchen trivets, and charms for bracelets or necklaces!

SQUARE 1 ART IS BACK!

Our amazing Art dept team of Mrs Hammernik, Mr Jaeger, and Ms Maurer is at it again- helping students create gorgeous works of art that we can have made into an array of products (like notebooks, magnets, water bottles, jewelry, etc.) as a way to raise money for our school.

Not only is Square 1 Art one of PTO's longest running annual fundraisers, it also gives parents a window into the incredible teaching and learning going on in SBS classrooms every day! This year's project lessons focused on Abstract Art, and the artists who have created some of the world's most famous works in this genre.

Ordering information from Square 1 is set to arrive prior to Spring Break (with delivery in time for Mothers Day)... but in the meantime, please watch the Reaching Out Newsletter, PTO Newsletter, and Social Media in the coming weeks for updates, a contest, and examples of the lessons taught in each grade!
