Cooling Centers and Community Assistance During Heat

ODESSA, Texas — As temperatures continue to rise across the Permian Basin, Odessa Fire Rescue, Odessa Police and the City of Odessa encourages residents to take precautions to stay safe and hydrated. Community partners are offering cooling spaces and other resources for individuals who may be affected by the extreme heat.

Residents who do not have access to adequate cooling are encouraged to utilize the following community resources:

Salvation Army of Odessa
810 E. 10th Street
- Opens when temps reach over 100 degrees
- Advice for people to enter the building off 10th Street (not 11th Street)
- Want to help? You can bring bottled water to the address above or make a monetary donation. Link: https://southernusa.salvationarmy.org/odessa

Ector County Library
321 W. 5th Street
- Open from 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Odessa Fire Rescue, Odessa Police and the City of Odessa reminds residents to limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of water, check on elderly neighbors and family members, and never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.

Anyone experiencing a heat-related emergency should call 911 immediately.

Today, our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Odessa Fire Rescue firefighter Isai Huerta, who tragically gave his life while serving and protecting our community.

To Isai's family, friends, and brothers and sisters at Odessa Fire Rescue, please know that you are not alone in your grief. The entire community stands beside you during this unimaginable time. We are praying for strength, comfort, and peace in the days ahead.

The loss of a public servant is felt far beyond the walls of their department. It is felt throughout the community they served, the lives they touched, and the people they protected. Isai's legacy will live on through his service, his sacrifice, and the countless lives he impacted.

From all of us, thank you, Isai Huerta. Your watch has ended, but your memory will forever remain in the hearts of Odessa.

Please keep the Huerta family and the members of Odessa Fire Rescue in your thoughts and prayers.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

The Constables Office for Precinct 1 has been made aware of the videos circulating via social media regarding a traffic stop that occurred earlier this morning.
At 7:51 AM, one of our deputies was flagged down by a citizen and alerted him about a reckless driver. The deputy pulled over to observe and saw the driver nearly strike multiple telephone poles and swerve in between lanes. The deputy then conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, at which point the driver was non-compliant. Once the vehicle stopped, the driver refused to comply with the deputy’s orders and an officer from an assisting agency then deployed pepper balls to get the driver to turn his car off and exit his vehicle. At no point in time were fi****ms discharged. Finally, with the assistance of other agencies, the driver complied and was detained. At that point, the driver let it be known that he was ill and medics were requested. Medics arrived immediately and the driver was transported to an area hospital and is receiving care. This investigation has been reviewed, and no further action has been taken.
We would like to thank our partner agencies for the quick response to assist our deputy. We would also like to thank citizens and their quick call to action on alerting our deputy of the potentially dangerous situation. If you experience a medical emergency while operating a vehicle, please pull over immediately and call 9-1-1 for assistance.
