Just a reminder that we are holding two upcoming events to learn about the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program. The first one is on Tuesday, September 1 at 6:00 pm, and the second is on Thursday, September 10 at 6:00 pm. Both will be held at the Odessa Community Building.

In the event of a major emergency or disaster within Odessa, the reality may be that public safety resources could be overwhelmed. That’s where a CERT program can be a tremendous benefit. It educates volunteers about disaster preparedness so they can perform a large number of basic tasks which frees up professional first responders for more complex and/or technical operations.

Odessa students are heading back to school tomorrow. Be sure to watch for school crossing guards and obey their signals. Always stop for school buses that are loading and unloading children. Also, let's all get back in the habit of slowing down in school zones. It may seem like a crawl when driving just 15 miles per hour in a school zone, but it only takes a second for a child to run out in front of a vehicle. If you are speeding, you might not have enough time to react. Please buckle up, put your phone down, and drive safely.

Come on out to Puddle Jumper Days and dunk a Police Officer or School Staff for a good cause! Three balls for $5. Or bring us new, unopened school supplies and get three balls per item. Common items needed are boxes of #2 pencils, Clorox wipes, colored pencils, kleenex, glue sticks, highlighters, hand sanitizer, and spiral notebooks. Money raised will go towards school supplies and the Shop with a Cop program. Mayor Whitsitt will be there from 1:00-2:00 pm today, school staff from 1:00-5:00 pm today, and Coach Jewel from 2:00-3:00 pm tomorrow. We hope to see you there!

In the event of a major emergency or disaster within Odessa, the reality may be that public safety resources could be overwhelmed. That’s where a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program can be a tremendous benefit. A local CERT program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness so they can perform a large number of basic tasks which frees up professional first responders for more complex and/or technical operations.

If you're interested in learning more about the CERT program, please attend one of the upcoming events at the Community Building on either September 1 at 6:00 pm or September 10 at 6:00 pm. We hope to see you there.
