Suspect in Custody Following Otway Street Explosion
ODESSA, MO – The Odessa Police Department is providing an update regarding an explosion that occurred in the 200 block of E. Otway earlier today. As of approximately 7:00 p.m. this evening, federal, state, and local law enforcement have rendered the scene safe. All residents that were evacuated from the surrounding area have been cleared to return to their homes. The Odessa Police would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation during the investigation.
The nature of the investigation shifted significantly throughout the day. While initial reports suggested a natural gas incident, specialized investigators from the Missouri State Fire Marshall’s Office and investigators with Spire, Inc. determined that the blast was not natural gas-related. Instead, evidence developed at the scene indicated chemicals associated with an improvised explosive device caused the explosion.
Upon this discovery, Odessa first responders evacuated the immediate area and requested the assistance of Federal, State and County law enforcement partners. Agencies responding to the scene included the FBI, ATF, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Bomb Squad, and the Lafayette County Drug Taskforce. These agencies worked with Odessa Police investigators to process the site and ensure no further hazards remained for the public. We reiterate that the situation is contained and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Following a search of property associated with the explosion, the single occupant of the residence, who was uninjured in the initial blast, was taken into custody. The suspect was transported to the Lafayette County Jail pending formal review by the Lafayette County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
