Are you in need of a smoke detector?

12/21/2025

On December 21st the Odessa Fire Department was dispatched for a structure fire in a residence in the Town of Cayuta. Upon arrival fire crews found the occupant outside the residence and were able to cut the electricity from the residence at an outside breaker. Investigation revealed an electrical fire inside an outlet in the living room that had a power adapter plugged into the bottom of the outlet, which had a failure within the components and started a small fire climbing the wall inside the residence.

The smoke detector alerted the occupant, who woke up, saw the fire, applied an extinguishing agent to the outlet, and then evacuated to call 911.

With the electrical power shut off fire crews checked for extension into the wall and found nothing behind the wall in the Livingroom.

The fire was contained to the electrical outlet and connected components. An inexpensive power adapter taking one, to three outlets experienced a catastrophic failure which caused high heat and a fire to spark.

This fire highlights the importance of having functioning smoke detectors, an evacuation plan, calling 911 immediately, and the use of UL tested equipment only.

Real Feel temperatures are important. And long term exposure to even mild temperatures can be dangerous.

With colder weather affecting the state today and "feels like" temperatures dropping below zero in several regions this evening, it's important to bundle up and dress warm when going outside.
