I had the good fortune today of meeting two real treasures from the Ogema area: Joyce Summers and Norma Swan. Their kindness is remarkable, and they welcomed me into their homes and memories to share their history of Ogema.
Joyce Summers holds what may be the most extensive collection of booklets, binders, folders, and photographs in all of Price County. She’s a history nut just like me, and even with all she showed me, we barely scratched the surface of her incredible collection. As a former teacher and educator, her attention to detail is impeccable! I hope to spend more time with her.
Norma Swan and her son Steven shared vivid stories of her early life in Virginia and life in “Hillbilly Country” which is what they called the area around Timms hill in the Town of Hill. She is sharp minded and even worked a jigsaw puzzle while we talked, showing a mind that can still multitask. The views from Norma’s home are spectacular, and she spoke so lovingly about her life with her husband and their Christmas tree business. She exudes love and kindness like a sweet fragrance.
Steven took me on a short ride along the hills of their property—miles of scenery in every direction, absolutely breathtaking. He also operates a gorgeous Airbnb perched atop the highest hill on their land, with window views that seem to stretch forever.
It was a wonderful experience from start to finish and I hope to see them soon!
