Many people don’t realize how much training, certification, time, and money goes into becoming a volunteer firefighter in Pennsylvania.
Joining a Pennsylvania fire department doesn’t mean you can immediately walk into a burning building, direct traffic, or provide medical care. Different responsibilities require different training and qualifications.
🔥 FIREFIGHTING:
Before performing interior firefighting duties, members must complete the training required by their department and applicable Pennsylvania standards. This can include firefighter fundamentals, PPE, SCBA, fire behavior, rescue, and hands-on training.
🚧 FIRE POLICE:
Fire police have Pennsylvania-specific training requirements before performing duties such as traffic control and protecting emergency scenes. They need to know how to safely work around moving traffic and emergency operations.
🚑 MEDICAL CALLS:
Being a firefighter does not automatically make someone an EMT. Pennsylvania EMS providers must complete the appropriate approved training and certification before providing medical care at their authorized level.
💰 WHO PAYS FOR IT?
Your local volunteer fire department.
Departments spend money on Pennsylvania-required or approved training, certifications, turnout gear, helmets, boots, gloves, SCBA, radios, safety vests, equipment, and much more.
And the firefighter gives something just as valuable — their time.
You don’t have to start by running into a burning building. You can help around the firehall, with fundraisers and dinners, assist with maintenance, become fire police, or begin working toward your firefighter or EMS training.
