Ordinary Magic
We are pleased to share another quote by the Vajra Regent from our new book, Radiating Confidence: The Shambhala Warrior's Way of Fearless Wisdom, in Chapter Two, "Seeing the World as Sacred." Here is the link to purchase the book: lulu.com. Go to Bookstore and enter “Radiating Confidence.”
Quote:
In the Shambhala tradition, the ideal way to expand your experience of the sacred world is through the sitting practice of meditation. Like the flame you create when you strike a match, it sparks your wakefulness. This flame of awareness deepens your connection to your own inherent goodness.
The sitting practice of meditation also opens your mind to an appreciation of the magic of life as it is: vivid, brilliant, and fresh—and at the same time, extremely ordinary. Every second of your ordinary experience, whether pleasant or not, is magical in the sense that it is the complete expression of your human dignity. It could be having a cup of tea with a friend, shopping for groceries, balancing your checking account, or even throwing out the garbage. Things are so ordinary, so simple—yet they are so extraordinary.
You begin to see that, throughout your life, basic goodness is the actual ground of what you are and who you are, and ordinary magic pervades everything you experience. In that way, your inherent wakefulness can blossom, radiating confidence in living your life to the fullest and making the world a better place.

FULFILLING THE ASPIRATIONS OF
THE VAJRA REGENT ÖSEL TENDZIN
The Great Being empowered as Karma Chökyi Dawa Legpai Lodrö Ösel Tendzin Chögle Namgyal,1 the Vajra Regent of the great Vajra Vidyadhara Trungpa Chökyi Gyatso, has protected us with great loving kindness. Having been greatly praised with the name Naljor Wangchuk Lhenkye Drupe Dorje2 by the Supreme Lord of Refuge Khyentse Wangpo, who was the crown ornament of the ancient teachings, he kindly bestowed upon us the essence of all the satdharma taught by the Buddha. In particular he bestowed the ripening abhishekas, liberating instructions, and supporting transmissions for the extraordinary yidam of all the Trungpas of Surmang, practiced as upaya in the form of Chakrasamvara and as prajna in the form of Vajrayogini. May we complete the utpattikrama of this extraordinary yidam. Having accomplished that, may we realize the essential profound sampannakrama--the path of liberation, mahamudra, and the path of upaya, Naropa's six dharmas. May we fulfill the aspiration of the root guru and greatly please him with the offering of practice. Having fulfilled his intention, may we be accepted by him. Sustained by the amrita of the dharma, may we never be separated from him.
This aspiration was made by the one called Thrangu Tülku in response to the request of the students of the Vajra Regent. May it be accomplished!

OFFERINGS TO COMMEMORATE THE PARINIRVANA OF
VIDYADHARA CHÖGYAM TRUNGPA RINPOCHE

From Rainclouds of Wisdom, by Vajra Regent Ösel Tendzin

From the ungraspable realm of space, the dharmakaya,
The wondrous appearance of translucent joy emerges as the splendid sambhogakaya.
With proclamations of victory the golden rain of compassion, the nirmanakaya, benefits all beings.
I prostrate to the root of blessings, the king of illusion, the father guru,
Chökyi Gyatso.
May our minds be inseparable like water poured into water.

— April 26, 1987

In the spring of 1987 the Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche passed into parinirvana. Out of an abundance of devotion and longing, the Vajra Regent Ösel Tendzin addressed the community and composed tributes in poetry and prose. Those contemporaneous expressions can be seen on the Timeline of Teachings, HERE https://www.vajraregent.org/?current_event=28

Simple Gratitude
A poem by Lady Lila Rich

The inheritance of the guru’s instructions
Is challenging and encouraging at once.
We are joined at the heart, where mind meets mind,
Where neurosis can’t linger and sanity can’t hide.
How did we live without you?

Allegorical or actual, icon or archetype,
We emulate the enlightenment ideal.
Shakyamuni, you, who never gave in,
Give confidence to seekers, now as then.
Where would we be without you?

The illuminating dawn of the unvarnished truth,
So shockingly fresh and exhilarating
The path of dharma, the trustworthy way,
Is the journey that is ours to make.
How lost we would be without it!

The elders and peers of shared aspirations
Riding the chariot of non-thought,
Help each other to see through the veils
While sharing in the cosmic joke.
Irreplaceable sangha, there’s no joy without you.

Endowed with a sense of wonder and fear,
Such is the wealth of human existence.
On this common ground we stand alike,
Then walk upon our own karmic byways.
What good fortune, the adventure of this life!

For no apparent reason I awoke this New Year’s day into
the space of simple joy, and these thoughts of gratitude
arose in my mind.

A LETTER FROM LADY LILA RICH

Dear Friends,

Greetings and auspicious good wishes for the year of the Earth Dog. I’m so happy to be connecting with all of you who have visited and supported the Vajra Regent Ösel Tendzin Library. I know from personal experience that my practice is greatly nourished by the wisdom, clarity, and directness of his elucidation of the dharma. We are all connected through those benefits.

Many of you have seen the fruits of our recent online development efforts, the Vajra Regent Ösel Tendzin Timeline of Teachings, click link: https://www.vajraregent.org/. Thank you to the patrons of this project. And thank you particularly to Mr. Robert Krupnick for the many hours of work preparing and uploading the Library collection into this new tool of access. Thanks also to Ms. Donna Holm and Ms. Jackie Saunders for their help. The work is ongoing. Not only does the Timeline tool digitally preserve and play audio or video of the Vajra Regent’s formal dharma talks, but alongside the talks are displays of any of the attendant poetry, calligraphy, photos, and participants’ recollections that occurred during the event.

I invite you to find an opening in the days to come to “tour” the Timeline of Teachings. By way of demonstrating this delightful new resource, allow me to direct your attention to the program entitled Space, Time, and Energy (see excerpt previously posted), from July 1983, at Karmê Chöling, Vermont. Listen to audio of the three talks through the Timeline Link here: https://www.vajraregent.org/?current_event=33.

Thank you.

Your dharma sister,

Lila Rich

THE TRUE NATURE OF MIND

According to the Kagyü gurus, mind is like space. Space is unobstructed, all pervasive, empty, and not produced by causes. Space accommodates everything—life and death, confusion and liberation. In that way it is the ground of everything. At the same time, space is ungraspable by thought and cannot be experienced as a thing. It is spotless because it has no allegiance, and to describe it is impossible. The best you can say is that space simply is, and in that sense it is primordially pure.
We should view our mind in the same way: mind is the ground of everything. It is empty of all conceptual notions and, in reality, empty of any cause. Not being dependent on cause, it shines by itself: it is luminous. Emptiness and luminosity are the nature of mind and inseparable from awareness. That is the essence of mind.

"We owe this incredible debt to Trungpa Rinpoche for his fierce kindness and his compassionate humor. He never did a better job, as far as I can tell, as leaving us with such a tremendous mess - Leaving me on my own in a way that I knew was unavoidable, but tried to avoid for a long time. But, it seems like the most important thing is to recognize that you are on your own, and the guru can only take you so far, can bring you to the abyss, so to speak, the edge of the cliff. And at that point, as Tilopa said to Naropa, if I had a student he’d jump off, right now. Naropa thinking, he must mean me, jumped Well, it’s not always the case that he does mean you. But even if you jump and break all your bones and make a mess, that’s an opportunity for the guru to point out that you are somewhat self-involved (laughs).

I find that to be the case with my own life, and I remember when Rinpoche was telling me, when he was a student in Sechen he was treated like a king. He was Jamgon Kontrul’s great son and young man, what, in his teens? And he was sort of like, the chosen one, a lot was riding on him and all this stuff. And he got a little puffed up. He was nervous that he would be found out. He was thinking a lot about himself. And He was cornered by his teacher, Khenpo Gangshar, by this method of embarrassing him in front of the entire assembly of monks, 500 or more monks. And Rinpoche told me it was the most horrifying, embarrassing situation, to be the important person, and to be put on the spot in a very gruff and forceful way. But he learned a lot from it. He must have, because he told me the story.

We owe that to him, that he was kind enough to let hang ourselves, and let us be put on the spot. I’ve never met a teacher who had that kind of far-reaching compassion. Usually they save you. You may go down for the third time, but some way or another they grab your hand. I’m not saying he’d let you drown - but I’m saying he would (laughs), if he felt that that would be the best way, whether in this life or in future lives, to attain enlightenment for you, drown you do then. Yeah. There a lot of things that have been said, what he said about me, what he said about this, what he said about that. But none of that really means anything. What really means anything is if you personally can attain enlightenment, individually, for the benefit of others. That’s all that means anything, because that’s the goal and that’s what the guru had in mind - unless he had in mind just to use you as a doormat, have some fun for himself, which anybody who knew Rinpoche and saw how he lived knew that wasn’t the case.

So for his great compassion we should be eternally grateful, and you should always keep some aspect of guru yoga happening, all the time, throughout the year. It’s the most direct method to get in touch with that kind of rugged compassion.

So to him, to the Dorje Dradul, the Dharmarajah, the first warrior, the warrior of warriors, the Sakyong, the great siddha, the terton – everything – to the Vidyadhara."

LONGING
Practicing meditation is not a matter of abandoning pain or erasing our memory of it. In fact, by practicing, our experience of suffering becomes more vivid. If we do not acknowledge having caused harm to ourselves and others, there is no way to go further. We cannot receive the precious instructions that lead to liberation, without taking responsibility for our whole life.
When we meet a genuine guru, we develop a deep longing to practice and attain that state of wholesomeness which is the complete fulfillment of our life as a human being. Milarepa saw in his guru the quality of the awakened state of mind, and he knew that was what he wanted to achieve. Our experience is precisely the same. In recognizing the awakened state of mind of the guru, we long to follow his example.
