Beaufort County Animal Services Do you own a pet in Beaufort County, South Carolina? We are your County Shelter! The Beaufort County Animal Services is a county run facility.
(300)

We are an open admission shelter that provides service to the residents of Beaufort County. Being an open admission shelter we accept any animal that is brought to us by residents from within Beaufort County. Because of our REDUCE initiative —which was designed to reduce overpopulation, euthanasia, disease, owner surrenders, and cruelty —we've been able to:

Begin to correct the disparity between

the number of animals that come into our care and the number of homes willing to adopt them, especially for felines. Reduce the rate of euthanasia by 50% from 2013 compared to the same time period in 2011. Increase the Live Release rate to 66% during the same time period. Partner with Hilton Head Humane to provide a low-cost, high quality spay/neuter service for pets of people in need. We also continue to work with our limited-admission organizations, to ensure the reduction of euthanasia in our area. Given the current challenges facing animals in our community, we believe it is imperative to continue to be a place for all animals in need by continuing to operate as an open-admission shelter. Whether open-admission or limited-admission, our combined efforts are achieving more for animals now more than ever before.

Please join us on June 15 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM as we kick off the celebration of 50 years of kindness to animals with Hilton Head Humane!

This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate five decades of compassion, advocacy, and lifesaving work for animals in our community.

Since 2012, Beaufort County Animal Services and Hilton Head Humane have worked together to address pet overpopulation through aggressive spay/neuter initiatives, free TNR programs, responsible ordinances, dedicated Animal Control officers, and strong community partnerships. Together, these efforts have helped reduce shelter intake and improve the lives of countless animals.

Join us as we celebrate the past, recognize those who made this progress possible, and look forward to an even brighter future for the animals of Beaufort County.

We hope to see you there!

The campus was truly a community effort. With the support of County Council, board members, and countless community supporters, we all made it happen. I’m proud of what we’ve all accomplished, but there’s still more work ahead. Here’s to those who will carry the mission forward and make the future even brighter.

Hilton Head Humane Story 43 of 50:

Tallulah’s Story:

Hilton Head Humane Association’s 50th Anniversary is not just a celebration of an organization, but it is also a celebration of what can happen when leadership, collaboration, and a shared vision come together for a greater purpose.

When I became Director of Beaufort County Animal Services in 2012, I quickly realized that Hilton Head Humane was an incredible resource that had not been fully utilized as part of a larger regional effort. I also realized very quickly that if we truly wanted to improve animal welfare in the Lowcountry, we could not continue operating independently from one another. We had to work together.

For decades, many shelters across the country duplicated positions, equipment, resources, and efforts instead of building partnerships. We believed there was a better way. The vision was simple: combine strengths, share resources, support one another, and focus on long-term solutions instead of short-term fixes.

One of the biggest solutions was spay and neuter. Since 1979, after hearing Bob Barker emphasize the importance of spaying and neutering pets, I understood that reducing intake not simply relocating animals was the true path forward. That philosophy became a driving force behind the collaboration between Beaufort County and Hilton Head Humane.

At the time, Beaufort County Animal Services operated near the air station, while animals were transported to Ridgeland for surgeries and then to Hilton Head Island for adoption opportunities. Eventually, we began discussing a different vision: instead of connecting organizations by highway, we would connect them by hallway. Many laughed when the idea of building a shared spay/neuter clinic and collaborative campus was first discussed but today that vision is reality.

That partnership helped reshape animal welfare in our region.

Over the years, through regional cooperation, aggressive spay/neuter efforts, trap-neuter-return programs, transfers, adoptions, and shared resources, we have dramatically reduced shelter intake while improving outcomes for animals throughout the Lowcountry. What once felt impossible became achievable because people chose collaboration over competition.

Hilton Head Humane’s veterinarians, staff, volunteers, leadership team, and supporters have played an enormous role in that success. Their willingness to partner, innovate, and think regionally helped create a model that continues to benefit animals and citizens alike.

We are also deeply appreciative of leaders like Chuck Laine, Phil Foot, Gary Kubic, Sheriff P.J. Tanner, and Rick Caporale, along with County Council members past and present, whose leadership and support helped make this collaboration and campus possible.

No one person built this. No one organization solved it alone. It took elected officials, nonprofit leaders, county leadership, veterinarians, staff members, volunteers, and community supporters all believing in the same mission and working toward the same goal.

As Hilton Head Humane celebrates 50 years of service, we celebrate not only its history, but also the example it has set for what regional collaboration can accomplish. The future of animal welfare in the Lowcountry will continue to depend on partnerships, innovation, and leaders willing to work together to build something bigger than themselves.
