A Close Call For Our Trooper

A routine construction shift on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike nearly turned into a tragedy earlier this week.

LT Forrest White #126 was working behind an attenuator truck and a lane-striping vehicle near mile marker 10. The crew was traveling around 10 mph, with LT White in the inside lane, emergency lights activated and warning approaching drivers to slow down and move over.

Then he noticed a semi-truck in his rearview mirror that didn’t appear to be slowing down.

LT White had to make a split-second decision. He moved in front of another semi and ended up in the ditch along the side of the highway. Moments later, the approaching semi struck the attenuator truck at an estimated 50 mph. The attenuator truck is specifically there to absorb an impact, and it did its job.

Thankfully, there were no serious injuries. One person in the attenuator truck was taken to the hospital to be checked out, and the semi driver was uninjured.

The semi driver told LT White he simply didn’t realize how slowly the construction crew was traveling. LT White issued him a citation for failure to reduce speed or move over, a violation carrying a $1,000 penalty.

This could have ended so much differently.

🚨 Please slow down. Move over. Pay attention. 🚨

Our road crews and law enforcement officers are putting their lives on the line every day to keep our highways safe. Give them the space and time they need to do their jobs and make it home safely.

Troopers’ Quick Actions Help Save Driver’s Life

On August 3, Troop L Troopers Kainen Nance and Haven Clemons were dispatched to a minor crash involving a vehicle that had left the roadway and struck a fence and a tree near Jay.

During their investigation, the troopers determined the driver had experienced a medical emergency. While on scene, the driver became unresponsive, and the troopers immediately began lifesaving CPR while an ambulance was requested.

The troopers continued CPR for approximately seven minutes before the driver was transported to the hospital.

We’re happy to report that the driver was released from the hospital two days later and is doing much better.

We’re proud of Troopers Nance and Clemons for their quick actions and dedication to helping someone in need. We wish the driver continued improvement and all the best in his recovery.

OHP NEEDS YOUR HELP

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is asking for the public’s assistance in a fatal hit-and-run involving a pedestrian that occurred Saturday morning, August 1, near I-35 southbound and Robinson Avenue.

At approximately 6:45 a.m., troopers were notified that a person was lying unattended on the shoulder. The pedestrian was later determined to have been struck by a vehicle that left the scene.
At this time, investigators have no information about the vehicle involved, and no one stopped at the scene to provide assistance.

The collision occurred sometime before 6:45 a.m. Saturday morning. Investigators are asking anyone who was traveling southbound on I-35 in the area of Robinson during the early morning hours—particularly anyone with dashcam footage or who may have witnessed something unusual—to contact the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Even information that may seem insignificant could help investigators identify the vehicle and determine what happened.

If you witnessed anything or have information about this incident, please contact the Central Regional Communications Center at 405-425-2323.

Please share this post. Someone may have seen something that could help bring answers to this investigation.

Behind one of our most talked-about incidents.

In this episode of Train Like a Trooper, Lt. Brack Miller joins us to break down the 2022 shooting that followed one of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol's most viewed—and still most commented on—pursuit videos.

As we watch the pursuit together, Lt. Miller walks through the decisions that were made, what was happening inside the patrol car, and the events that led up to the shooting. It's an opportunity to hear directly from the trooper involved and gain insight into the realities of high-risk law enforcement situations.

And yes... we address the question everyone has been asking for years: Was Lt. Miller wearing his seatbelt? You'll have to tune in to hear the answer.

Watch the full episode and hear the story behind the headlines.

As students head back to the classroom, school buses will once again be a familiar sight on Oklahoma roads.

Every stop matters. Every child matters.

When you see a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended:
🛑 Stop.
👀 Watch for children crossing the road.
📵 Put distractions away and stay alert.
⏱️ A few extra seconds of patience can save a life.

This video explains exactly when you have to stop if you're traveling the opposite direction from the school bus.

Whether you're driving through your neighborhood, a rural highway, or a busy city street, slowing down and staying attentive helps ensure every student gets to and from school safely.

Let's make this school year a safe one for every Oklahoma family.
