🎉 Happy 82nd Birthday, Smokey Bear! 🌲✨
Yesterday was an incredible day across Oklahoma! Oklahoma Forestry Services teamed up with our friends at Oklahoma State Parks to throw Smokey Bear an epic birthday celebration and honor his legendary message of wildfire prevention. 🔥❌
We had a blast hanging out with so many amazing families and future wildfire prevention heroes across three fantastic locations:
📍 Salt Plains State Park (check out the fun in the photo! 👇)
📍 Lake Thunderbird State Park
📍 Tenkiller State Park
A huge thank you to everyone who dropped by to share a high-five with Smokey, enjoy some treats, and commit to keeping our state safe and green. 📸🌲
Tell us in the comments: What’s your favorite Oklahoma State Park to visit with family? 👇
Remember... Only YOU can prevent wildfires! 💪💚

Hot conditions return today with some areas of elevated fire weather expected in western Oklahoma this afternoon. Some rain chances develop later this week although wetting amounts will likely be confined to isolated storm cells focused on the northern counties. Lightning ignitions later this week may occur and firefighters are reminded to expect erratic fire behavior in the vicinity of any storm cell where gusty, outflow winds may affect fire behavior rapidly.

Remember, whether it’s a campfire or a brush pile:
Do not leave your fire unattended.
Have a means to suppress your fire on hand.
Drown and stir the coals when done and then drown it again.

Phototropism in action! This pine sapling was planted in shade and started bending toward the sun, growing at a dramatic angle as its stem twisted to chase light. Some trees instinctively reach for brighter spots, but too much shading can slow growth or stunt development. Other trees are more shade tolerant. If you’re planning or managing a new stand of trees, a little spacing and careful site selection can help young forests grow straight and strong.

Quick tips from the field:
- Plant with adequate spacing to reduce competition for light.
- If a sapling grows too tall and leggy, consider selective pruning or relocating to a sunnier, open area.
- Keep an eye on power lines and overhead obstacles to avoid future hazards.

Whew, Oklahoma heat is no joke today! ☀️ With air temperatures reaching 103° and "feels like" temps topping 115°, we decided to measure how much relief our urban trees actually provide.

We used a surface thermometer on a stretch of concrete:
🌡️ In the blazing sun: 154.6°

🌡️ In the shade of a tree (5 feet away): 110.7°

That tree shade knocked nearly 44 degrees off the pavement temperature! 🌳

As extreme heat impacts our state, expanding our community native tree canopy is one of the most effective ways to lower surface temperatures, reduce the urban heat island effect, and make outdoor spaces safer for families and pets.

Big thanks to the trees doing the hard work in our communities today! 🌲❤️

What’s your favorite shade tree in your yard or local park? Let us know in the comments!

Excessive heat and primarily dry conditions are forecasted through the week ahead. Wildfire activity is expected to increase although initial attack efforts are expected to remain successful. Western Oklahoma remains in the grips of drought that extends into some areas of central Oklahoma. With the heat and building separation from wetting rainfall, a modest uptick in wildfire activity is expected coupled with increased resistance to control where drought indices in the extreme to exceptional classification persist in western Oklahoma. Large fire potential remains limited to areas where terrain and/or vegetation limit access while significant fire potential is low.

Please refrain or delay outdoor burning activities if possible. Escaped debris burns, outdoor welding and haying operations are common wildfire causes during the summer months. Consider the following if engaging in those activities:
• Ensure all equipment is properly maintained and inspected daily.
• Have a means of fire suppression on hand such as a fire extinguisher, water source and/or a rake or shovel.
• If welding outdoors, post a look out and work over welding mats or blankets.
• If debris burning, make proper notifications and stay with your burn until fully extinguished

Quiz time! We need your help! You are the arborist called out to diagnose a sick Autumn Blaze Maple Based solely on these photos. What can you tell us about potential causes of decline according to the visible symptoms? And remember, it’s rarely a single issue that causes tree decline. So think about layers of stressors. We'll post our thoughts on the tree tomorrow around lunch time so you can compare your thoughts with ours.
