“It’s nice to feel respected and important.”

When Nina was experiencing homelessness, she was working night shifts at IHOP and riding three buses to reach the Women’s Sanctuary in Norman. She was so exhausted that she often fell asleep along the way—the bus drivers even nicknamed her
“Sleeping Beauty.”

Eventually, Nina found our Oklahoma City Sanctuary closer to where she was staying.

There, she found things many of us rarely have to think about: a safe place to sleep. A warm shower. A nourishing meal. People who knew her name.

She began working with a case manager, received needed dental care and found a place she especially loved in Sanctuary’s community garden. Today, Nina is still working—and is in the process of purchasing an RV of her own.

Recently, Catholic Charities staff joined colleagues from across our community for a New View Training focused on better serving individuals who are blind or have low vision.

Through hands-on exercises, participants learned practical ways to appropriately assist someone with a vision impairment while minimizing distress and promoting comfort, dignity and independence.

We were grateful to learn alongside representatives from City Care Night Shelter, Homeless Alliance, Cardinal Community House, Neighborhood Services Organization and Oklahoma City Fire Department’s Mobile Integrated Healthcare team.

Thank you to everyone who participated and continues working to make our community more accessible and welcoming for the people we serve. 💙
