Today, we had the incredible honor of welcoming the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Steel Across America tour to Oklahoma City.

As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center is traveling across the country, allowing communities to reflect, remember, and honor those we lost.

During their visit, members of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation placed a wreath at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, honoring the lives lost on September 11, 2001, as well as the 168 lives taken in the April 19, 1995 bombing. It was a powerful moment of remembrance that connected two tragedies that forever changed our nation and our city.

Seeing this piece of history in person is difficult to put into words. It serves as a reminder of the resilience that emerges from unimaginable loss and the strength found in communities that refuse to forget.

We are grateful that Oklahoma City was chosen as one of the stops on this meaningful journey.

At approximately 4:05 p.m., Oklahoma City firefighters responded to the 8300 block of NW 10th Street following reports of a fire involving a second-story window air conditioning unit.

Upon arrival, crews reported similar conditions and quickly advanced to the second floor, where they encountered significant smoke and heat. During a primary search, firefighters located an adult male victim on the second-story floor and immediately removed him from the structure.

The victim was transported in critical condition to a local hospital. The victim later passed away.

No other units were damaged, and no other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. OKCPD Homicide Investigators and OKCFD Fire Investigators are on scene conducting a joint investigation.

Smoke alarms save lives! Be sure your home has working alarms on every level, inside and outside all sleeping areas. Test them monthly and change the batteries twice a year. If the alarm sounds, get out immediately, go to your meeting spot, and wait for firefighters to arrive.

OKC residents can get free smoke alarms and installation by calling 405-316-BEEP (2337).

This photo is a powerful reminder from the OKCFD Fire Marshal’s Office. Every alarm on this “Wall of Fame” went off in a real fire and saved lives right here in OKC. Some are burned, some melted—but they all made the difference between life and tragedy.

You can still enjoy a spectacular fireworks show while leaving the fireworks to the professionals.

Throughout the Oklahoma City metro, residents have opportunities to safely celebrate Independence Day at organized fireworks displays. Professional shows provide the excitement of fireworks without the risks of burns, injuries, or fires.

Consumer fireworks remain prohibited within Oklahoma City limits. By attending a public display, you can help keep our community safe while enjoying a memorable holiday with family and friends.

Yesterday, crews responded to the I-35 southbound to I-40 eastbound ramp after an asphalt and gravel spill forced its closure. Firefighters worked to remove heavy debris from the roadway and used apparatus-mounted turrets to clear the remaining material, helping reopen the ramp and restore traffic flow.

Heat Safety Reminder

With today’s heat index expected to exceed 100°F, take steps to stay safe in the extreme heat.

Drink water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon and take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning when possible.

Be aware of the signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, headache, nausea, muscle cramps, and confusion. If someone shows severe symptoms or becomes unresponsive, call 911 immediately.

Remember to check on family members, neighbors, and pets, and never leave children or animals unattended in a vehicle.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe.

🚒 Over the weekend, Oklahoma City firefighters responded to a two-vehicle collision near NW 36th and May Avenue.

One vehicle left the roadway and came to rest approximately 20 feet down in a concrete spillway. Firefighters accessed the vehicle, assessed the occupants, and used a specialized rope haul system and Stokes basket to safely extricate two injured patients from the spillway.

Both patients were transported to a local trauma center for further evaluation. The driver of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries and declined treatment on scene.

May Avenue was temporarily closed in both directions while crews worked to ensure a safe rescue operation.

Excellent teamwork by all responding agencies helped bring the incident to a safe conclusion.

🚒Two helmet cameras. Multiple assignments. One coordinated operation. 🔥

Extinguishing a structure fire requires coordinated efforts from multiple fire crews working together to bring the flames under control. This combined footage shows firefighters operating in different areas of the same home at the same time, each with a specific assignment that contributes to the overall fireground strategy.
