Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics

Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics This includes the preservation and improvement of the state’s 108 public airports, which make up the state airport system.

Founded in 1946 as the Aviation Commission, reorganized as Aeronautics in 1963, and named the Department of Aerospace & Aeronautics in 2023, the agency has the following divisions: Administration, Airports, Aero Education, UAS/AAM, and Space Development. The Commission was created in 1963 by the Oklahoma Legislature to advance, foster, and assist in the development of aeronautics in Oklahoma, incl

uding current and future aircraft, and to encourage the establishment and maintenance of public airports. Since FY2002, the Commission has invested $212.8 million in federal funds and $75 million of the $89.3 million it has received in state funds into airport infrastructure - 84% of OAC’s total revenues invested in airport infrastructure across the state. OAC is funded directly by users of the Oklahoma Airport System through aircraft excise and fuel taxes, and aircraft registration fees with intermittent appropriations from the Legislature. These taxes, fees, and appropriations generate $5 million on average annually, with 84% going directly back into airports.

✈️ $2 MILLION for aerospace and aviation education in Oklahoma!

During this week's ODAA Commission meeting, commissioners approved a $2 million investment for FY27 to continue expanding aerospace education and career pathways for students across our state.

That means more opportunities for Oklahoma students through:

✈️ Aviation and aerospace classroom programs
🚁 Drones and UAS education
🛫 Flight simulators and pilot pathways
🔧 Aircraft maintenance and aircraft-building programs
🚀 STEM and engineering competitions
👩‍🏫 Teacher training and classroom resources
💼 Aerospace internships and workforce development

We’re giving students the opportunity to discover aerospace early, build real-world skills and see a future for themselves in one of Oklahoma’s largest and most important industries.

Oklahoma is leading the way, and we’re continuing to invest in the students who will keep us there.

August is officially cleared for takeoff, and Oklahoma’s aerospace and defense sector is flying high! ✈️🚀

Our Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics team had an action-packed week crisscrossing the state to support innovation, infrastructure, and growth.

Here is a look at our major milestones from last week:

🎤 Executive Director Grayson Ardies took the stage to share our state’s aviation vision at both Select Oklahoma and Tinker and the Primes!

✂️ We celebrated the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the state-of-the-art Anechoic Chamber at FISTA Innovation Park in Lawton.

👀 Our team got a fantastic walk-through sneak peek of the beautiful new 31,000+ square-foot terminal building at Stillwater Regional Airport ahead of its grand opening.

🏗️ We proudly attended the official groundbreaking for the massive Bomber Agile Common Hangar (BACH) project at Tinker Air Force Base.

From defense capabilities to commercial air travel infrastructure, Oklahoma continues to secure its spot as a premier global aerospace hub. A huge thank you to all of our incredible partners moving us forward!

🚀 A Milestone Day for Oklahoma Aerospace & Defense

On August 3, the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics joined federal, state and local leaders at FISTA Innovation Park in Lawton to celebrate two major milestones for Oklahoma’s aerospace and defense industries.

The event included the ribbon-cutting of FISTA’s new Anechoic Chamber, an advanced testing facility that will support aerospace, radar and defense technologies. Leaders also celebrated the groundbreaking for the future manufacturing facility of Advanced Navigation & Positioning Corporation (ANPC), further expanding Oklahoma’s growing aerospace and defense ecosystem.

We were proud to join Congressman Tom Cole, Mayor Stan Booker, Lawton Fort Sill, OK, representatives from Fort Sill, industry leaders and community partners for this exciting occasion. We also thank Southwest Auto Group for its investment in the FISTA STEM Lab, helping inspire and prepare the next generation of Oklahoma’s workforce.

Together, these investments strengthen national security, create new opportunities for innovation and workforce development, and reinforce Southwest Oklahoma’s role in the future of aerospace and defense.

Happy Birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard! ⚓✈️

Even though we are a landlocked state, the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics proudly recognizes the incredible Coast Guard aviators and crews who protect our nation’s waterways, conduct daring search and rescue missions, and secure our maritime borders.

From the skies to the seas, thank you for your unwavering dedication and service. Semper Paratus!

Oklahoma is taking weather observation to new heights! 🚁🌦️

Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics joined federal, state and university leaders this week at OU’s Kessler Atmospheric and Ecological Field Station for the ribbon-cutting and unveiling of the Oklahoma 3D Mesonet.

This first-of-its-kind atmospheric observing system integrates unmanned aircraft systems with the Oklahoma Mesonet ground network to collect critical data from the lower atmosphere in real time—information that can help improve the accuracy of weather forecasts and warnings.

Over the past decade, Oklahoma Mesonet stations have supported more than 1,000 UAS research flights. Now, the technology is moving closer to operational use through regularly scheduled flights at the Washington, OK Mesonet station for the National Weather Service.

We also had the opportunity to see the technology in action during a live drone demonstration.

ODAA Executive Director Grayson Ardies joined Congressman Tom Cole, OU College of Atmospheric & Geographic Sciences Dean Bob Palmer and Director of the Office of Observations of the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) Ajay Mehta in recognizing this important milestone.

This is Oklahoma innovation at its best by bringing together aviation, research and public service to build a safer, more weather-ready future.

Congratulations to Boeing on the progress of the 737-10! ✈️

We’re proud that Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority provided the foundational testing ground for the largest model in the 737 MAX family.

During an 18-day campaign in early 2021, our Burns Flat infrastructure supported Boeing’s onsite crew with the key assets needed to collect critical flight data:

🔹2.55-mile runway for specialized takeoff and landing profiles.

🔹Open airspace and uncongested corridors for uninterrupted testing.

🔹96-acre apron allowed sufficient staging space for support equipment.

🔹Provided secure airfield access and full FBO fueling services.

👉 Check out the video to see these massive jets in action on our runway!
