In 2010, City leadership recognized the need for a more comprehensive and coordinated approach to neighborhood revitalization. City leaders believed that struggling neighborhoods can be turned around with strategic interventions that support the physical revitalization of housing and infrastructure as well as the expansion of citizen opportunities to improve quality of life. At the direction of th
e City Council’s Neighborhood Conservation Committee, a new program framework, the Strong Neighborhoods Initiative (SNI), was developed that seeks to holistically improve neighborhoods through physical, social and economic investments that will tip neighborhoods toward self-sufficiency. The SNI program has completed work in the first round of neighborhoods, Classen Ten Penn (2013-18), Classen’s North Highland Parked (2013-2017), and Culbertson’s East Highland (2013-2020). We will continue to track, share and celebrate their revitalization progress. SNI is currently working with 3 additional neighborhoods, Capitol Hill (2018), Capitol View (2018), and Metro Park (2020). Staff is working with neighborhood residents, local stakeholders and city departments to develop and implement revitalization strategies for all three neighborhoods.
