Central High School (the building that now houses OCU Law) was sold by Oklahoma City Public Schools in 1981. Emerson Alternative School along North Walker provides a vital service to young people from across our city, but after the sale of Central High School, there was no longer a neighborhood public school in downtown.

In the 1990s, OKC cast a vision for revitalizing downtown. For downtown to regain all the foundational elements of a community, it needed a neighborhood school again. And so in 2001, a downtown elementary school was included in the second MAPS program - MAPS for Kids.

That became John Rex Elementary School, which opened in 2014. A middle school and junior high followed.

And today, John Rex leadership announced it will open John Rex Polytechnic High School at NW 6th and Hudson in the Fall of 2027. For the first time in half a century, there will be a public neighborhood high school in downtown Oklahoma City.

I congratulate and thank everyone involved for reaching the milestone of this announcement!

The 7th grade students took their learning out of the classroom by visiting the worksite of the Continental Coliseum. While there, students learned about the many careers in construction and looked at actual blueprints of the building. Using their knowledge of scale factor, they calculated the actual size of parts of the building from the plans.

Earlier this school year, Chet supported Ms. Basinger’s classroom by donating to her teacher wishlist, and now two of our teachers Ms. Basinger & Mrs. Sierra, were invited to his gala celebrating educators!

Thank you, Chet, for not only giving back to our classrooms, but for taking the time to listen to teachers, hear what we need, and genuinely invest in our students. We are so grateful for such a special night! ⚡️💙
