Okmulgee County Conservation District The Okmulgee County Conservation District is responsible for the conservation and restoration of our natural resources.

• Okmulgee County is mostly prairie and lies almost entirely within the Cherokee Prairies land resource area. Overall, it slopes very gently to the south and east. The prairies originally had a cover of tall grass, but other areas were predominantly forested. The forest consisted of blackjack oak, post oak, and hickory on the sandier ridges; oaks on the sandy terraces along the Deep Fork Canadian

River (also called the Deep Fork River ); and various deciduous trees on the bottoms along other streams. The elevation ranges from about 1,000 feet in the northwestern corner to about 590 feet on the southeastern edge.

• Most of the county is drained by the Deep Fork Canadian River, which flows from the central western edge southeast to the eastern edge and eventually into the North Canadian River at a point several miles east of the county line. Creeks that flow to the north and east drain the northeastern third. Two small areas in the southeastern and southwestern corners are drained by the North Canadian River , which flows across the county at the far southeastern corner. All these streams are tributaries of the Arkansas River .

• Okmulgee County is divided agriculturally in to two regions: the northeast and eastern area has more cropland whereas the western and southern area of the county is now predominately former farmland converted to livestock and hay production.

Virtual fencing is getting a lot of attention in the grazing world. But does it actually make sense for your operation?

Noble Research Institute director of research Maria Silveira has studied the technology firsthand as part of a two-year research project at the University of Florida, and her take is more nuanced than most of what you'll read online. The short answer: it depends on how you graze.

"It saves time if the person is rotating the cows very frequently, but not as much in a continuous stocking situation," Silveira says.

The article covers how virtual fencing works, where it delivers real value, where it falls short and what producers considering it should understand before investing. Silveira is candid about the correlation between virtual fencing and better forage production in her research: "That's not from the virtual fence itself. It's just the grazing management. But a major barrier for producers to use rotational grazing is the infrastructure required or the labor if we're using electric fencing. So even though we cannot tie that directly to virtual fencing, it's a way to facilitate the adoption of rotational grazing."

The Okmulge County Conservation District is excited to announce the NACD 2026 Youth Poster Contest!

If you are a student in the Okmulgee County district and are in kindergarten through twelfth grade you are encouraged to submit a poster for the contest.

This year’s theme is “Soil. Where it all Begins” and the deadline to submit your poster is 4:30 pm, Friday September 25, 2026 to the Okmulgee County Conservation District office located at 719 E. 8th st suite B Okmulgee, OK 74447.
I have forms in the office that be attached to the back of the poster.

The 2nd year of the Restoring Natural Ecology in Wetlands (ReNEW) is now live!

This initiative provides technical and financial support for a range of wetland restoration practices to enhance environmental benefits.

Wetlands in Oklahoma provide essential services, including improved water quality, reduced flooding, aquifer recharge, and recreational opportunities. The program, led by the OCC Wetlands team, focuses on increasing the quantity, quality, and biological diversity of wetlands in Oklahoma.

The program's application window is now open and will remain open through September 30, 2026. Interested landowners can apply through the Wetlands website or through their local conservation district.

1-year practice completion requirement from time of conservation plan approval

Program participants may be eligible for up to $50,000 in reimbursement for implementing practices in accordance with an approved conservation plan. The program will use a standard unit cost for conservation practices and landowners receive 90% return bases on current Oklahoma State Cost share practice rates
