The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners meeting this morning included a recognition for the many recent national awards won by JCW! The BOCC recognized the JCW team for:

🏆 Five Peak Performance Awards from National Association of Clean Water Agencies for outstanding compliance records in the 2025 calendar year, winning three platinum awards, one gold and one silver.

🏆 The National Environmental Achievement Award from NACWA in the Public Information & Education category for the fats, oils and grease (FOG) Program.

🏆 The President's Award from NACWA for General Manager Susan Pekarek's clean water advocacy.

Team members from all winning facilities, the FOG team and JCW leadership were in attendance for the recognition. Great job, everyone! 👏👏👏

1️⃣Scrape grease solids directly into a lined trash can.
2️⃣Pour cooled grease into a sealable container.
3️⃣Wipe remaining grease and debris with a paper towel.

Home garbage disposals do not keep grease out of the sewer system. Hot water and other products such as soap that claim to dissolve grease only pass it down the line causing blockages and overflows. 🙅‍♀️

📣 The first stage of 95th intersection work has been completed and the west side of the 95th intersection is now open.

Work will continue North and South of 95th Street for continued pipe/paving work with State Line Road being reduced to one northbound and one southbound lane. See the map for details.

Unlike toilet paper, they don't dissolve, which means they’re a leading cause of nasty clogs and sewer backups. 🤢

Do your pipes (and the environment) a favor—toss them in the trash. 🗑️

🏆 We are so proud to announce that due to the amazing work of our team members, JCW has won five Peak Performance Awards from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies! This award is for distinguished performance in wastewater treatment in the 2025 calendar year.

We received awards for the following plants:

💙 Blue River Main received a Platinum 20 Award (recognized for 20 years of full compliance)
💙 New Century Air Center received a Platinum 14 Award (recognized for 14 years of full compliance)
💙 Douglas L. Smith Middle Basin received a Platinum 12 Award (recognized for 12 years of full compliance)
💙 Mill Creek Regional received a Gold Peak Performance Award (achieved for one year of perfect 100% Compliance with their NPDES permit)
💙 Tomahawk received a Silver Peak Performance Award (reported five or fewer violations to its NPDES permit in a one-year period)

🗓 The Board of County Commissioners will highlight the utility for these awards at its regular session on Aug. 20, 2026.

📣 We are now accepting applications for a 12-week fall internship in the Water Quality Lab! We are looking for one intern who wants to learn about the collection and testing of water in Johnson County. 🔗 Links in comments 👇

🕛 This is a part-time (10/hrs a week), unpaid internship open to students older than 16, and non-student adults who reside in the KC Metro Area.

🗓️ We will be accepting applications until Aug. 14, 2026. The internship will begin Sept. 14, 2026, with a mandatory orientation the week prior.
