PRESENCE OF WEST NILE VIRUS DETECTED IN MOOSIC, LACKAWANNA COUNTY

A positive mosquito sample was collected on August 24th in Moosic Borough.

No human cases have been reported in Lackawanna County at this time.

Officials from Lackawanna County and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection are monitoring the situation.

Residents in the area are advised to take precautions when outdoors and to eliminate standing water on their property.

NOTICE OF POLICE OFFICER CIVIL SERVICE RECRUITMENT

The Civil Service Commission of the Borough of Moosic is accepting applications to establish an eligibility list for the position of Full-Time Police Officer. Applicants must possess current MPOETC Act 120 Certification or otherwise be eligible for certification in accordance with MPOETC requirements and satisfy all qualifications established by the Borough’s Civil Service Rules and Regulations.

Applications may be obtained at the Moosic Borough Municipal Building, 715 Main Street, Moosic PA 18507, during normal business hours, or downloaded from moosicborough.com. There is a non-refundable fee of $50.00 due at the time of application. Completed applications must be received no later than 3:00 PM on Friday, September 18, 2026.

Qualified applicants will be notified of the date, time, location, and procedures for written examination, oral examination, physical agility test, background check, drug screening, medical and psychological examination following the application review process. Moosic High School, Class of 1961, the final graduating class from the high school, will be celebrating their 65-year Anniversary, on Saturday, October 3rd, from Noon until 4 PM at Grande Restaurant 4200 Birney Ave. Moosic.

This event will feature a cash bar and Dutch Treat format where each person is responsible for their own meal and drinks. Please feel free to bring a guest, dress is casual. A deposit is not required, but reservations need to be confirmed by Saturday, September 26th, since seating is limited.

Big news for Moosic today! ❤️💙

We are so grateful to Senator Marty Flynn, Rep. Jim Haddock, Governor Josh Shapiro & Secretary of Transportation Mike Carroll for securing these funds.

🛣️This Main Street safety and Revitalization Project
begins at Main Street from Birney Avenue and goes to Third Street. The award will be used for:
ADA-compliant sidewalks
ADA-compliant curb ramps
Enhanced Pedestrian crosswalks
Pedestrian Lighting
Digital information sign at Municipal Building
Drainage infrastructure of ponding occurring near railroad tracks

We are equally grateful for the $2 million award sought by our Lackawanna County Commissioners to improve signage and safety on Montage Mountain. Thank you for your continued partnership! 🎶🤝

At our July Council Meeting, we recognized George and Melissa Weitz for their continued involvement in Moosic. George and Melissa run the Moosic Youth Center, have helped our Police Department organize its annual fundraiser to support the K-9 Unit, and once again played a big role in helping with this year’s Move with Moosic 5K Run/Walk.

At our August Council Meeting, we recognized Riverside Football Coach Jim Tucker and the Riverside Football Team for their help with this year’s 5K. The team did a great job helping keep the race course organized and cheering on the kids during the Fun Run! 🏃‍♂️🏈

BOROUGH OF MOOSIC ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENTS
Notice is given that the Zoning Board of Adjustments of the Borough of Moosic will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at the Moosic Borough Building, 715 Main Street, Moosic at 7:00 P.M.. The purpose of this public hearing is for the following issues:

Hear the variance and special use application filed by RUKH Development, LLC for the undeveloped property owned by the Scranton Lackawanna Industrial Building Company located between Montage Mountain Road and Glenmaura National Boulevard, Moosic PA, further identified as parcel numbers 18601-050-005 and 18601-010-010. The developer proposes to construct multiple townhouse and residential apartment units on the property and is seeking variances for parking and impervious lot coverage and a special exception for the building’s height. The property is located in a Planned Development Zone (PDZ).

The public is invited to attend and present testimony.
