Tonight’s Wednesday night drill focused on near-shore boat operations.

Boat 5 launched from Greenwich Point with a crew of three and navigated through tidal estuaries across the district, working to locate a moving land crew using a combination of latitude/longitude coordinates and physical addresses. At the same time, crews at Greenwich Point reviewed various water-related emergency scenarios, discussing incident priorities, response considerations, and the equipment required for each situation.

As the land crew relocated, personnel rotated through the boat to gain valuable hands-on experience. Operating in these areas presents unique challenges, including narrow waterways, changing conditions, and significant tidal fluctuations. Training in these environments is critical to maintaining the skills necessary to safely and effectively respond to emergencies along Greenwich’s 27 miles of beautiful coastline.

Whether assisting distressed boaters, searching for missing persons, or responding to water rescues, our members continue to train to ensure they are prepared when our residents and visitors need us most.

Although we missed posting during Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, we still wanted to take a moment to recognize and share this GFP article highlighting the outstanding work of our dispatch center. Their professionalism, dedication, and calm under pressure play a critical role in everything we do.

James Bonney takes us "Behind the Headset" in his interview with Nicholas Didelot, manager of Greenwich's public safety dispatch. Advances in technology have transformed the role, allowing dispatchers to coordinate in real time with neighboring agencies, track vehicles across jurisdictions, and support investigations far beyond town lines. https://bit.ly/4u0GRzt

Once again, our dedicated volunteers took part in advanced vehicle extrication training class. Hosted by We had the opportunity to work alongside several of our mutual aid partners, tackling a series of challenging and realistic scenarios put together by the instructors.

As you can see from the photos, “challenging” is putting it lightly. These evolutions pushed our members to think, adapt, and perform under pressure.

It’s always a pleasure training and working alongside all of you—we appreciate the continued partnership and shared commitment to providing the highest level of service to our community.

🚨 SHOUT-OUT ALERT ‼️
Huge congratulations to SBVFD alumnus Tim Hannigan on his first published article in Fire Engineering magazine!
Tim started his fire service journey at Sound Beach with Explorer Post 500 in the early 2000s and has since served in multiple departments across the region. He currently holds the rank of Assistant Chief at Purchase Fire Department (NY) while also running as an Irons firefighter with Rescue 5 in the Bridgeport Fire Department (CT).
Anyone who knows Tim knows his unmatched passion for the job and the lasting impact he leaves on everyone he works with. Next up: he’ll be presenting at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) in April 2026!
Incredibly proud of you, Timmy — well deserved! The entire SBVFD family and the CT/NY fire service community are cheering you on. https://digital.fireengineering.com/fireengineering/november_2025/MobilePagedReplica.action?pm=1&folio=42

Today, members of Sound Beach and teamed up with Greenwich High School for Safe Driving Day, an immersive program designed to show teens the real‑world consequences of impaired and distracted driving.

Our crew set up a full‑scale mock vehicle extrication infront of the school. Student actors—who absolutely nailed their roles—portrayed crash victims trapped inside a wrecked car. Firefighters demonstrated every step of the rescue: stabilizing the vehicle, removing the doors and roof with hydraulic tools, and coordinating with EMS crews. Meanwhile, medical personnel provided on‑scene triage and transport, explaining their assessments to the crowd.

To round out the scenario, officers from the Greenwich Police Department conducted live field‑sobriety tests and performed a staged “arrest” of the student playing the impaired driver. Watching a classmate in handcuffs made the legal stakes hit home.

Events like this are at the heart of our mission. By bringing classroom lessons to life, we hope students will think twice before getting behind the wheel under the influence—or letting a distracted friend drive.

A huge shout‑out to the Student Outreach Club for months of planning and for rallying hundreds of students to attend. Their dedication, along with the enthusiasm of the student actors, turned a safety lecture into a powerful learning experience. We’re proud to partner with such motivated young leaders and look forward to supporting Safe Driving Day for years to come.

Thank you to our public safety dispatchers!

Thank you to our public safety dispatchers!

"What is the location of your emergency?"—This is the first question you'll hear when you dial 911 in Greenwich. Every year, our emergency and non-emergency lines receive over 100,000 calls, and our Public Safety Telecommunicators are the crucial link between those in distress and the first responders who save lives. Each year, during the second week of April, we recognize the dedication and professionalism of our Public Safety Dispatchers. These unsung heroes play a pivotal role in apprehending criminals, suppressing fires, and treating patients daily.

A dedicated team of 16 highly trained dispatchers works 24/7, ensuring that every emergency is met with the quickest, most effective response. They are the lifeline for police officers, firefighters, and paramedics/EMTs, delivering precise information while providing real-time emergency medical instructions to callers—helping them assist patients until first responders arrive.

For every incident, dispatchers coordinate personnel and resources, ensuring a safe and timely response. They also work closely with other town departments like Public Works, Parks & Recreation, and Human Services and link with external agencies such as the American Red Cross and utility providers when needed.

The Greenwich Police Department wishes the Town of Greenwich Public Safety Dispatchers a Happy 2025 National Telecommunicators Week. Thank you for your service!
