It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Firefighter Paramedic John Bysko, son of Old Lyme EMS President Jane Bysko.

John was a longtime member of Old Lyme EMS, serving on both our volunteer and paid staff as an EMT over the years. His dedication, sense of humor, and commitment to helping others left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.

John was more than a colleague—he was a friend, a mentor, and family to so many of us both in our organization as well as the Old Lyme Fire Department. His loss is felt deeply, not only here in Old Lyme, but also within his career department at North Haven Fire Department and across the fire and EMS community.

Our hearts are with the Bysko family during this difficult time. Your Old Lyme EMS family stands with you, keeping you in our thoughts and prayers, and honoring the many memories of John’s service and friendship.

It is with deepest regret that we announce the passing of Firefighter John Bysko earlier this morning. John faithfully served the department for 14 years and was most recently assigned to Fire Headquarters. His unique sense of humor and passion for the job will be deeply missed by all who worked alongside him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Bysko family and stand ready to provide any support they may need in the weeks ahead. Information regarding services will be shared as it becomes available.

As a follow-up to our post from a few months ago regarding a serious rollover accident on Boston Post Rd, and exceptional actions taken by our members, Old Lyme EMS Deputy Chief Dan Labriola was one of the techs on the ambulance and provided patient care that helped the patient make a speedy recovery. He is a hard man to track down due to all the time he dedicates to Old Lyme EMS and Lyme EMS, but thankfully Capt. Flagg was able to find him on shift today to pass on his recognition. Congratulations Chief! 🚑 🥳

As our 2024 comes to an end, we want to shine a light on members who were recently awarded the ESI Holmatro Gold Pin Award for their efforts in preserving life by using a Holmatro Rescue Tool. Fantastic work was swiftly performed on scene, which directly resulted in the positive outcome of the patient.

On the morning of July 12th at 12:46am, OLFD was dispatched to a single vehicle rollover at 52 Boston Post Rd. Initial company officers arrived on scene within 5 minutes of the call coming in. Deputy Chief James Caramante established command and performed a 360° assessment of the crash while Capt. Jared Flagg assessed the patient’s condition inside the heavily damaged vehicle. The patient was unconscious with agonal breathing and a weak pulse, along with several other injuries. Lifestar was requested, with a landing zone at Jewett Field a mile away. Engine 5 arrived and driver Engineer Jim Jewett immediately set up the Holmatro Combi unit and ram, and then stretched a hose line due to an active fuel leak. Capt. Mat Merill, Lt. Chris Dow and FF Archer Evans stabilized the vehicle utilizing our Res-Q-Jacks, while FF Nick Parillo and Capt. Flagg removed the passenger rear door with the combi tool. Capt. Flagg then used the Holmatro ram to spread the door frame from the roof line that was pinning the patient in the vehicle. A rapid extrication was then performed by Capt. Flagg, Capt. Merill and FF/EMT Kevin Roe. The patient was transported to the Landing Zone by Old Lyme EMS, where they were subsequently flown to Hartford Hospital. The patient left our scene in critical condition and we are happy to report after a significant stay in the hospital they have made a full recovery without any lasting effects. For this reason, the ESI Holmatro Gold Pin Award is well earned by every individual on scene.

Members on scene awarded:
Deputy Chief James Caramante (Command)
1st Assit. Chief Ken Swaney (E2)
2nd Assit. John Duddy (R38)
Capt. Mat Merrill
Capt. Jared Flagg
Lt. Chris Dow
Engineer Jim Jewett (E5)
FF/EMT Kevin Roe
FF Archer Evans
FF Nick Parillo
Deputy Chief Dan Labriola (OLEMS)

We don't make a practice to post about calls, but the wins are worth celebrating, and we are so happy that our efforts resulted in such a positive outcome. We don't always hear our patient's outcome once they leave our scene, we are so glad this person had a positive recovery! Congratulations to this group for their efforts that night!

Thank you to Holmatro for awarding our well deserved members, upon submission by Deputy Chief Caramante and Capt. Flagg.
