Last night marked a historic occasion in Old Tappan as Kathryn J. Weaver was sworn in as the borough’s first female Chief of Police and only the third woman in Bergen County to attain the rank. Surrounded by family, friends, colleagues, elected officials, and members of the community at Borough Hall, Chief Weaver took the oath of office administered by Mayor Gallagher, marking a proud and significant moment for both the department and the borough. The ceremony not only commemorated a milestone in local history, but also celebrated the exceptional leadership, dedication, and professionalism Chief Weaver has exemplified throughout her distinguished career in law enforcement.
Chief Weaver began her career in public safety as a dispatcher in 2001 before being hired as a police officer with the Old Tappan Police Department on January 20, 2004. Throughout her 24 years in public safety, she has earned the respect of her fellow officers and community members through her professionalism, integrity, and unwavering commitment to public service. In 2022, she was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, further solidifying her role as a leader within the department. Chief Weaver has earned numerous accomplishments along the way, including multiple Critical Care Save Awards dating back to 2008. In addition, Chief Weaver brings a strong educational background to her new position, holding a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, reflecting her commitment to continued education and professional excellence.
While the ceremony honored Chief Weaver’s professional accomplishments, it also reflected the importance of family and community support throughout her journey. Standing proudly beside her were her husband, Ryan, their two sons, Jaxson and Brody, and her mother, Grace, who have supported her every step of the way. As Chief Weaver begins this new chapter leading the Old Tappan Police Department, her appointment serves as an inspiration to future generations and a testament to the progress being made in law enforcement leadership across New Jersey.
