🚨 Brace Yourselves: El Niño is Gearing Up for Summer 2026!
Forecasters are predicting that a developing El Niño could seriously supercharge our weather over the coming months. It all starts with ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific rising just 0.9°F (0.5°C) above average, but the ripple effects will be felt thousands of miles away.
Here is a breakdown of what this volatile season could bring across the U.S.:
🌡️ Widespread Heat: Almost the entire contiguous U.S. is expected to see above-average temperatures. Prepare for heavier reliance on air conditioning and potentially higher energy bills.
🌪️ Severe Storms: The Plains, Midwest, and Ohio Valley are on high alert for active severe weather from June into July, including near or above-average tornado activity.
💨 Dangerous Derechos: Later in the summer, watch out for powerful thunderstorm systems capable of 100 mph (161 km/h) winds that can knock out power for days and flatten crops.
🌧️ Flooding & Monsoons: Major flooding is a concern from Texas to the Ohio Valley. Meanwhile, the Southwest might see monsoon moisture bursts bringing relief from the heat, but also triggering flash floods, mudslides, and lightning-sparked fires.
🏜️ Worsening Drought: Parts of the Northwest, Northern California, the Gulf Coast, and the Southeast should prepare for increasingly dry conditions.
Looking Ahead
If this pattern continues to strengthen, forecasters warn it could evolve into a rare "super El Niño" by the end of 2026, bringing even larger impacts into early 2027.
